Kazakhs have one of the largest tribal structures in the Eurasian steppe. It consists of three zhuzes - Senior, Middle and Junior.
Twelve clans of the Senior Zhuz mainly live in South Kazakhstan. According to the traditional Kazakh genealogy, also known as shezhire, 9 out of 12 clans have a common ancestor known as Maiky-biy. Historical sources mention that he headed the western part of the Golden Horde under Genghis Khan's grandson, Batu. These nine clans together form the Uisun tribe. The three remaining clans (jalayyrs, kanly and shanyshkyly) have their own ancestors and are considered genealogically unrelated to each other and to the Uysun tribal association.
There are three main hypotheses about the origin of the Uisun tribe. The first is the origin from the early Usuns, a tribe of Indo-Iranian or Tocharian origin, which lived in the Tarim River basin. This area is adjacent to the site of the current Uisun residence.
Two other versions suggest a more distant migration from Mongolia. Therefore, in the new work, the researchers decided to check which of the three versions is most likely from the point of view of genetics.
