THIS IS WHAT THE KUMITE OF OLD STYLE KARATE LOOKED LIKE
I'm often asked to provide reference to what a typical kakedameshi practice session looks like. So I decided to make this video with a continuous session of that kind of training with one of my students. Also called kake kumite, this is the most fundamental "sparring" method of the historical karate from the Ryūkyū Kingdom.
As you can see, the main aspects of the practice are the maintenance of a close-quarters engagement distance (typical of a self-defense situation) and an agreed-upon level of control when applying the techniques (which creates a better learning environment and prevents most injuries). It has a lot in common with other traditional Chinese "pushing hands" practices such as wing chun's chi sao and tai chi's tui shou, but the freedom of action is far greater in karate's kakedameshi. In any case, it's worth noting that the resemblance is not a coincidence, as historical karate was heavily influenced by Chinese traditional martial arts.
This kind of training, along with a few important variations, is one of the most fundamental practices of the Muidokan Karate Kenkyukai curriculum. It is extremely relevant for those who want to train practical karate and/or self-defense, since it combines a great level of freedom and realism with a reasonable level of safety.
Kakedameshi/kake kumite is the most basic and most important method for practicing real kata applications. How many kata applications can you spot from this video? There are several, and I'll highlight them in a future post.
If you want to read more about this excellent training practice, I highly recommended you to check the article written by my student and Muidokan member Bruno Chagas in Muidokan website: muidokan.com/kake-kumite-kake...
