It's a shame that Godfather Part Four never got made. I would have loved to see Andy Garcia take the Corleone family from the regal elegance of the forties to the age of eighties sleazy overindulgence. I could imagine him cutting deals with south American cartels and drinking champagne with a Don King type with lots of scantily clad females around. I'm guessing Andy Garcia s role in OCEAN'S ELEVEN is the closest we'll ever get to that.

You skipped over an important “What If” considering the casting of Mary Corleone in THE GODFATHER PART III. On July 18, 1989, actress Rebecca Schaeffer (TV’s My Sister Sam) was preparing for an audition later that day for the role of Mary Corleone. Hearing a knock at her apartment door (likely thinking it would be something like a screenplay delivery), Rebecca Schaeffer was instead faced with an insane fan, who shot and murdered her, reportedly with her Godfather Part III screenplay laying nearby. Schaeffer’s death led a year later to California’s passing of the USA’s first anti-stalking bill in 1990. We have no way of knowing if Rebecca Schaeffer would have landed the role of Mary Corleone, but if she had, neither Winona Ryder nor Sofia Coppola might have either been considered for the role.

With Sinatra I heard that Coppola or Paramount approached him, and he said no after "persuasion" from some of his "friends". My thoughts about what was discussed: *Leone's Godfather Film would almost certainly be even more negative towards Vito, Michael and the rest of the Mafia compared to what we got. Mainly because One Upon A Time In America portrayed organised crime in a very negative way. *I'm not entirely sure if Brando could have successfully portrayed a younger Vito for various reasons. Not the least the fact he looked too old for the part. *I would have loved to see the original Godfather Part III proposal be made, because the plot is interesting enough for someone to make a good film out of it. *Stallone should have taken up the offer for The Godfather Part III, mainly because it would have further boosted his career after making Rocky and the first Rambo film. *There is also another reason why The Godfather Part IV shouldn't be made, which is that Coppola himself wouldn't be the one to direct it.

Another couple of interesting early directing maybes for Scorsese: He asked his friend Paul Schrader if he could direct his script The Yakuza, a detective story set in Japan. The studio however said no, and went with the more experienced Sydney Pollack. Scorsese doing a film about the Japanese Mafia sounds fascinating. In 1969, Scorsese, fresh off his first feature (Who's That Knocking At My Door? (1968) held the screen rights for a year for Phillip K Dick's novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? His friend and ongoing collaborator Jay Cocks spent that time developing a screenplay, After the rights lapsed, the film would later be shot and released as Blade Runner.

Robert Evans should be a template for what a studio head should be. So many classic films were only made because he believed in them and let the artists do their work. If it's true that Castellano didn't think that Clemenza would betray the Corleones I agree. I think the movie would have been stronger if he'd be in it, just as GF III would have been infinitely better with Tom Hagen. Still no matter how many times I've watched Godfather II, I could never see Clemenza playing the role that eventually became Frank Pantangelli even though it was weird Pantagelli's name never came up in the first film. Also bless Pacino for holding out for a better screenplay; if only more actors would take more pride in their work and demand better material.

Godfather 4 sounds that it would have been really good. As for the alternate 3rd one with the CIA conspiracy, I think it could have had a great mirroring and contrasting of Michael and Anthony as well as the era of their crime family. Michael left the family to fight in WW2 as a Marine and came back to help the family, meanwhile Anthony was in the Navy and later CIA before coming back to the family for help. 1940s had the family at their perceived height but with heavy competition. Meanwhile the 60s and 70s saw the family at the height of their expansion and influence, their monetary and power “golden age” where they are in a position to be needed to help Anthony where before Michael was needed to help the family.

If Godfather's I and II were paintings they would be sitting in the Louve! If Godfather III was a painting it would be sitting above my grandmother's sofa!

I remember hearing about the rumored Part IV movie back in the late 90s fresh off of Leonardo DiCaprio’s Titanic fame. It was a joke in a Jay Leno monologue: “It’s going to be called Godfather IV: sorry about Part III”

Just wondering why Al Ruddy isn’t mentioned even though he won an Oscar for Producing it? I thought he would have had input of some kind.

“the only way I'd do it was if they'd let me film 'Abbott and Costello Meet the Godfather'- that would have been fun.” Francis Ford Coppola…. Great content as always Bullets and Blockbusters

Great video. I always felt something was off about part 3 - it just really lacks the attention to detail the previous two films have. The point you made about the costuming and hairstyles sums it up really

I truly believe that shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and Better Call Saul, owe their entire existence to The Godfather.

The Godfather 1 and 2 is the actual story. Both 3 and 4 feels like a epilogue. 3 the death of Michael, and 4 the destruction/end of the family. I wish part 2 got the old man Michael ending because it feels more like a definitive ending for the whole saga.

The Godfather never needed a PT.4 - Shit, some would say it didn’t need a PT.3 but the idea of continuing the franchise is interesting.

Seriously I would love to see DiCaprio as a brutal mafia boss. He’s great as a good guy in movies, but he’s awesome as a villain, it’s why I love Wolf on Wall Street.
