As an sound designer and sound editor, i was patiently awaiting someone to do this after seeing Decino's one for Doom's effects. i have a large collection of Sound ideas' libraries on my drives and am an avid sound effects collector. its so nice to see people discussing this type of stuff, ame sound design, and sound design in general is an extremely underrated subject. reguarding sound effects that may sound different vs sources, i explained this in Decino's vid covering doom/s effects. Compression plays a big part if changing a sound's characteristics, you're stripping information from the sound to bring down its filesize, witch can majorly change how it can sound and feel. A lot of editing is done sometimes ontop of that. to make everything sound a little more unique or to add some sort of consistancy.

When we started our courses on sound editing I immediately started to recognize sounds from hollywood edge, sound ideas as something I heard in Doom, Duke and a dozen other games. Sound designers working with games back then were wizards. They didn't have half the capabilities we have nowadays yet they somehow managed to create some of the most memorable soundscapes

I'd suspect different algorithms used for modifying pitch and tempo probably play a big role as none of them are perfect (and i'm sure this was especially the case in the 90s) and will introduce their own different artifacts. But also some of the sounds sound like they might have some amount of delay/reverb.

You don't have to look any further than Doom's soundtrack to see that Bobby seemed to be an expert on how to walk that fine line between "inspiration" and "plagiarism" back in the 90's. He knew how to change his work up _just_ enough to not be worth Hollywood's time to suing over back when the game industry was just a pissant little upstart subsection of the entertainment industry. There's no way half the shit he did back in the day would fly today, now that gaming is _the_ dominant entertainment medium and has so many eye and ear balls laser-focused on it.

I learned about the Elder Fudd origins of the Mancubus/Octabrain sound a while ago, but was a bit conflicted over publicly spreading the information in case that would inadvertently lead to the games being taken down from storefronts in a panic cause WB would smell blood in the water. We kinda have a precedent for this already since AFAIK it was the fan speculation over the MJ connection with the Sonic 3 music leading to Sonic 3 rereleases being buried by Sega over legal issues for a long time until they replaced those tracks. The JP T-Rex may just as well be a case of common stock effect usage. Even if the sound was made specifically for the movie originally, I don't think it's uncommon for movie sounds to end up being sub-licensed into commercial libraries afterwards.

It's amazing how a lot of these sounds I've heard in many movies and games of the time - Warcraft, HeXen, Heretic, Doom, Duke, etc! It's almost as though they were not only pulling from the same sound library, but they had favorites too! Hexen Ettin idle = Assault Trooper Idle Warcraft II dragons sound like Heretic Saberclaws Heretic gargoyle death, Warcraft I spider death, Revenant Death sound, gemstone being pulled out at the end of Diablo 1... that gory skeleton crunch. "Human Groan" has also been used in not just Duke or Doom... but Heretic II as well! And how many times have we heard the imp 'Camel' sounds, the Icon of Sin spawn sound, and others in various movies and things? Foley sound creation, with it's pulling found sound libraries and raw creation using unconventional objects, is quite interesting!

I notice a LOT of the same sound effects here and there -- mostly stuff like wind blowing or door sounds. There's a horse whinnying that is used WAY too frequently. Generally I don't mind too much; I just notice it. Maybe I can turn it into a scavenger hunt too. One of the most amusing so far was a crying sound usually used in the Slappy Squirrel segments of _Animaniacs._ Skippy Squirrel ALWAYS makes the noise when crying, which happens in almost every one. I heard the exact same noise in _The Babadook._ Right after the stupid kid says "Does it hurt the boy?" he turns over and the exact same crying noise played. I couldn't take the movie too seriously after that. XD

Yes, I have, in fact, MANY TIMES, wondered about the origins of the SFX of MANY of my favorite games from growing up. Basically, once I was old enough to understand that, especially in games, libraries of pre-recorded sound effects were often used, and not, as I believed, ALL sound effects were made up and individual to that game, is when that wonder started. There was a time when I thought each sound effect from each game was uniquely created for that specific game. I suppose in a way that's true given that the original sources weren't used, but compressed versions were, then tech advanced where people could more easily slow down/speed up, reverse, add reverb, etc. I miss the limitations of the past in a way. It created so much that was still unique. EDIT: Also, my surprise was the Octabrain. Reverse engineering that sound into "quiet" was ... well terrifying. I had a similar experience at about 9 when I first extracted all of Doom's sounds, and reversed the Icon of Sin, to find out it was John Romero, i about shit my pants...

I always thought the Battle Lord sounded like a dinosaur so it felt nice to have it confirmed with that old movie clip

I can't fully remember the order, but if I recall correctly, dzierzan went searching kknd sound sources for our remake, then found and made lists for doom, duke3d etc. sure sound ideas has them nowadays, but they originated mostly from the Hollywood edge premiere edition volume 1+2 (kknd). He spent quite some time fiddling with the effects trying to reconstruct them. Nice to see that work used by clicking a random video suggestion on YT :)

7:24 reminds me of screams from old X-Com: terror from the deep, but I might just be hearing things...

I am totally fine with you becoming Duke-cino, especially if you get into the technical workings of the Build Engine (because it doesn't get the same kind of love as Id Tech)

Woah....the slimer "roar" sounds like the roar of the monster from 1961's Gorgo. Might want to check that out.

I'm pretty sure the PREDDY (Scream Male, Long) sound at 7:19 is also used in BLOOD as the death sound of those machine gunner enemies.

This was such a find. Also, I always wondered where did a few other sounds come from, such as those strange ambient machinery or alien sounds that often plays when you're in the space ambiences/alien vicinities in Chapter 2. They probably come from the same sound library.

Few months ago i was doing research for quake's sound origins as i want to make a high quality sound pack for quake. This was very interesting and funny, i found a lot of the same material. Maybe do an episode for Quake sounds too? 🙂

Please remeber to put some reverb / echo on the files too... just trust me it will help it sound better and also mask any abrupt cuts or harsh edits ((I do it alot when making even HD sound samples to this day bud)).

I guess I never thought about the sound origins, but I did play around with them back in the day. When I learned how to extract the sounds I swapped the file names around and/or substituted other sounds from outside the game to create some amusing effects. One I recall is I changed the chaingun shooting sound with a Homer Simpson "DOH!", thereby making a rapid repeating "DOH!" gun. Another one was that I took one of Duke's pain sounds, I think the last one he makes before he dies and used it as the peeing relief sound. I remember my roommate damn near fell out his chair when his Duke character used a urinal and screamed out in pain! 🤣

Heh. My friends and I always joked about the microwave gun sounding like a Heat Ray. Never imagined it was literally the same sound effect used in the old George Pal "War of the Worlds" film though. And knowing that, I now realize waramb2 "shell flyby and explode" also featured prominently in that film, right after the Cylinder crashes into the farmhouse.
