Have not read any of these, but many of them sound very good. My Friends and Orbital sound like things I would be into as well. Thanks for talking about the shortlist.

The only book I’ve read on the list is Ordinary Human Failings Delighted it’s getting more recognition.

Most of the books are on my short list. Thanks for your summaries- it makes it difficult where to start.

We saw H Matar at the Cambridge Literary Festival and it was very moving to hear him read passages from this book. I loved his book The Return, so I’m really looking forward to reading this! The Future Future sounds intriguing! My husband enjoyed Orbital and it’s now on my tbr pile.

That's great, I wish I could have seen that. It was fascinating reading The Return after My Friends to see where there was overlap between Matar's own story and that of his characters.

Some of these books actually sound interesting, the space book obviously, the Malcolm X story and maybe even that Mark Twain pastiche may be worth trying

I was wondering if you will be following this year's awards 😂 I'm reading Orwell's essays and got to know about the Orwell Foundation and the awards including the other categories. This may be the only time I'm ever interested in anything related to politics, also glad that the definition of what constitutes political is not as narrow as I originally expected it to be.

What an amazing shortlist! I haven't read them all, but it seems like an embarrassment of riches. I can't say with certainty, having not read all of them, but I think "James" and "Blackouts" deserve any award they get...

Reread 1984 this year and just finished Julia today. I was rattled by both stories. Which is the sign of an effective storytelling, when it has an emotional effect.

This is such a strong list! It’s wonderful! I have read five and am really looking forward to our group read of Caledonian Road. I’m hard pressed to pick a favorite from this line-up.

Yeah, I'd find it very difficult to pick just one winner if I was a judge. Looking forward to discussing O'Hagan's book soon!
