Less than you think, actually. It's reported he rarely drank (he even used to turn over his wine glass at official dinners so he wouldn't be served), but when he did drink, it was to extreme excess. Less an alcoholic, and more an extreme binge drinker.

@yesm2302 Oh, I'm not saying he didn't have a problem. It's just that his problem was far less severe than people make it out to be. I read one historian's take on it, and they said it was likely he was trying to self-medicate PTSD episodes. I have what I would describe as a complicated take on a complicated man with a complicated problem. "President Grant was an alcoholic" is objectively untrue, but "President Grant had a serious binge drinking problem" is VERY true.

Well grant was a better man than most. While he wasn’t always anti slavery and never really cared if it stayed or went and was reported to have owned one slave in his life, due to his experiences in the war he changed his tune. Seeing slavery for what it was and worked hard in the war and fought for the freedoms of the enslaved that were still enslaved after the war and in the Indigenous territories. He wouldn’t hate a black cop doing his job because to him free black people made for fine citizens and defenders of the USA. Still kinda funny to hear that crazy devil skipped out on his court date.

@@cococock2418 Hmm no times back then we’re still pretty racist even Grant for a time was very neutral on slavery and frankly didn’t care about abolition even early on in the war. But as the war went on he saw the evil that it was, changed his mind after hearing and seeing black men fight for the Union and seeing the evils of it down south he changed going fully anti slavery and continued to fight for the end of slavery after the war ended and in the indigenous territories. So racism was still a real thing, but grant wouldn’t hate on a black cop doing his duty.

If that was your message were you going to point out it was tribes at war catching other groups and selling them, something that’s also gone on through out humanity.
