city of moorabbin exploded in population during this time. farmers were approached by realestate agents (before big housing companies and mass production of estates) in the paddocks and were talked into selling up for a small fortune. then the agent would set up marquee and sell the individual 3/4 acre blocks to potential buyers who wanted to build a house. sporadic and insane houses popped up in paddocks with no power water sewage or accessable surfaced roads. it got so bad the city of moorabbin held a meeting forcing new estates to be connected to essentials. this most likely drove up the price of a house and most likely was the start of housing companies thinking bigger on buying and building massive estates. mulgrave is a good example of this being built during the 70s and so is endeavour hills.

This 3 hour documentary "Magical Land of Oz" is on DVD via eBay. I just bought 2 DVD, with one for my nearly 5 year old (birthday on 30 Dec 2022) niece to show her what our lives were like in Melbourne (North Balwyn and nearby bush environs) in the late 1950's and 1960's.

Clayton South was all bush and tea trees, gum trees and bats and sandpits that were later filled with domestic waste. In the early 80's, Harris trains were dumped there because of the asbestos scare. Lot of trains. Shame they buried all that aluminium that could have been recycled. In the early 60 we used to swim down the creek on the south side of Burke Road, a dusty track back then, connecting the skinny Clayton Road and Old Dandenong Road west, towards Moorabbin, whereas the north side still had farms. Clayton Primary school which is 90 years old is still there today and all the farms have been developed into housing. It's a far cry from the beautiful open space with lots of fresh air to the hustle and bustle of today where the last 50 years the stench of tipping and the methane gas that was drifting low at night made Clayton the worst offending place to live. Yet, in these 40-50 years, the smell didn't stop land purchasers and housing expansion. Today the entire south of Clayton is now developed and continued until they encroached around Moorabbin Airport. The Clayton I remember in my youth is no longer the place of forested bush land, of mini-bikes and horse riding, of eggs farms and vegetables. I used to lived in Kimbarra Street.

@Paul Thanks for letting me know, Paul. Small world, isn't it? I grew up in Clayton when the rabbits were on the empty land at the back of Sigma Pharmaceutical, Marchants and Johns Hydraulics, if you still remember these. Marchants soft drinks left a long time ago. The building was then rented to a company called Half Case Warehouse for a few years until i lost track of what other companies let the building. John's Hydraulics went next and Sigma moved out a few years ago. So many changes have occurred in Clayton lately. Who would have thought that 40 years later the Dandenong rail line would be running over Clayton Rd and above Centre Rd? 🙄

Great history there Mick. Grew up in Clayton myself in the late 70s & early 80s, just off centre road. Moved out in early 2000s. Went to Clayton primary. As you say, that area is just so different nowadays. From Monash hospital, to Monash University, the train line, to name a few of the significant changes.

Haha I came to say the same thing!! I remember being woken up in the early morning hours by the sound of the milkman and his horse and cart, and clanging milk bottles.....and the milk!!! Glass bottles.Yummy cream on top. And the alumininum caps that the birds would peck through to get to the cream lol....this was up to around mid 1970’s. Happy days.
