The Pace Report: "I'm Still Standing" The George Cables Interview
Welcome to this special edition of The Pace Report featuring legendary pianist and composer George Cables.
If anybody in the jazz community that everyone respects and adores, it's George Cables. In a career spanning some six decades, George has been one of the hardest working touring and recorded pianists of his generation. The Queens, New York native has recorded with the likes Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordon, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, and Art Pepper.
Even when George began his career as a teen he played with musicians who'd become icons in their own right. He formed The Jazz Samaritans when he was 17 and featured a young Steve Grossman and Billy Cobham.
He's been a prolific composer and leader and has influenced a legion of musicians. His current HighNote Records release "I'm All Smiles" showcases his comeback after battling a few health setbacks.
A couple weeks ago George played a very special concert with legendary drummer Victor Lewis at Terremoto Coffee Room in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.
I sat down with George to talk about the current jazz scene in New York, reflect on the music legacy of both McCoy Tyner and Larry Willis, and his take on the next generation of jazz musicians.
This interview includes performances from Terremoto Coffee Room and Dizzy's here in New York City.
