Alfred the Great is remembered today as the King of Wessex and the King of the Anglo-Saxons who helped to defeat the Vikings. During his reign, there would be many battles and skirmishes between his Saxon army and the Danes who wished to conquer parts of England and settle for themselves. The Danes were seen as the most feared conquerors at the time, and they were known for their violent actions sacking and raiding settlements and towns. But in Alfred the Great, they met a feared and brilliant military leader, but a man who was also incredibly pious and devoted to his Christian religion and education. Alfred promoted scholarly works and education during his reign, and despite negotiating successfully with the Danes, he was seen as a man who wished to improve the Saxon culture. He was well respected as a man and as a King, but throughout his life he was very sick.
Alfred the Great was known for having problems with his stomach that sometimes could cause him to become bed ridden with awful pain. His stomach issues eventually led to his death, and he was known for being very sick at times. Today it would be diagnosed that Alfred the Great had Crohn's Disease, a very painful illness that can affect the digestive system. But during the Medieval period, medicine was not very advanced. He did make some attempts to make his health better, but eventually he died a very painful death relating to his stomach problems. But regardless of this, Alfred was considered one of the greatest Kings.
