Spud Productions is dedicated to preserving the memory of the Panama Canal Zone from the serviceman's perspective. One of the best kept secrets in the U.S. military was an assignment there. Not even existing for a century, the "Zone" came into being when the U.S. started to build the Panama Canal in 1903, and the phasing out began when the Torrijos-Carter Treaties went into effect on September 30, 1979. Panama officially regained full control on December 31, 1999.
In spite of the usual longings of young G.I.s away from home (family, spouse/partner back in the states, "Dear John" letters, etc.), Panama gave us a most amazing gift. The memories are so precious because the experience was so fleeting -- the average tour was a two-year hitch -- only a "blip" in a long life. They also have a drop of poignancy because the experience was taken away. Now it is a dream because the Zone is no longer in existence. This sentiment is not resentful towards the Republic of Panama -- if one truly loved the Canal Zone one loved Panama as well. To Panama we say "Buena Suerte" -- you will always have a special place in our hearts.
