The current Paris National Opera was designed by the architect Charles Garnier. When he won the competition for the design of the new opera house, he was young and unknown.
Due to its polychrome style and seemingly extravagant gilding, even when the opera house was still under construction, it had become the target of public criticism. However, with his rare talents and immense patience, Garnier balanced the styles of over hundreds of artists whom he commissioned, and after 14 years, completed this legendary building.
As the Paris National Opera is welcoming its 350 anniversary, Hantang Culture’s production team headed to Paris to produce special episodes of A World of Excellence documentary for this occasion. We interviewed the Intendant of the Paris National Opera and its Patrimony Architect, employed 3-D modelling and special effects, to trace the history of its architecture and the calibre beneath its daring style.
