This brings back lots of memories of when I was young watching this show in the 70's. Shirley Jones was David Cassidy's real life stepmom. David was considered a heart throb by many teenage girls. Their biggest hit was "I Think I Love You". The Partridge Family was loosely based on the real-life musical family the Cowsills, a popular band in the late 1960s & early 1970s. You may want to check out some of their hits such as "Indian Lake", "Hair" & "The Rain, the Park & Other Things".

Family flavor bubblegum! The Partridge Family was a half-hour sitcom that ABC ran on Friday night from 1970 until 1974 before going into syndication. I grew up watching the re-runs. "C'mon, Get Happy", the theme song to the show, is catchy too. Shirley Jones, who plays the mother in the show, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 1960 for her work opposite Burt Lancaster in the movie Elmer Gantry, about a con-man selling religion to small town America. When you're ready for more early seventies bubblegum, check out "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies.

You are right - the late 60's/early 70's is my favorite era. Even though alot of bad was going on in the world and in government, there was still kind of an innocence. I cringed when I saw you were featuring this song. It was actually not bad though. I'm glad there wasn't a video. Partridge Family was one of those REALLY corney TV shows directed at teeny boppers, but at the time, i loved it! I was a tween and was one of the millions of little girls who had a huge crush on David Cassidy. He was so cute, and was actully a good singer to boot. Poor man, I wonder if he was ever able to escape his teen idol image - it is a curse for most young men.

Oh, I needed the laugh when you acted out the movie lines... "I Love You...' Of course the Partridge Family wasn't a real family. They were a TV family that sang together from a television series called The Partridge Family. The actress Shirley Jones played a widowed mother who formed a band with her 5 kids. I absolutely loved that series, and the oldest brother (David Cassidy) was a heartthrob.

Interesting piece here. David Cassidy actually did provide lead vocals, with academy award winning actress( and David's stepmom) Shirley Jones on accompanying vocals. Instrumentation provided by " The Wrecking Crew.

Their tv show was so good. They were extremely famous, like huge screaming crowds kind of famous. Of course there was a teen idol heart throb...the lead singer David Cassidy. Funny show with a family band going around on a painted bus. Kind of the hippy generation but very cleaned up for tv, bright and shiny but with long hair.

You can’t even imagine what a huge heartthrob star David Cassidy was back in the day. He was on the cover of so many magazines, etc. I think he and Shirley Jones were the only ones in the group who actually sang. Everyone else was dubbed. L O L, we were more into the Brady Bunch than The Partridge Family but oh well…

Look at the back covers of all of your Partridge Family albums. You will see the names Mike Appel and Jim Cretecos. You will then see that the publishing company was known as Laurel Canyon Publishing. In 1972, those two guys and their publishing company would become involved with an up and coming artist from New Jersey whose name is Bruce Springsteen. Laurel Canyon Publishing, via Appel & Cretecos, would become embroiled in the famous lawsuit with Springsteen once Springsteen met up with a music critic writer named Jon Landau. Landau would become Bruce's manager and push Appel and Cretecos out of the picture.

teen idols of the 70s were all the craze. tiger beat magazine (is it still around?) had cover stories on david cassidy in just about every issue. it was really a brilliant marketing scheme first used by the monkees: create a tv show based on a musical act, hire incredible song writers to come up with catchy tunes, thrown in a teenage heartthrob (in the monkees case, davy jones) and BOOM! instant success! the partridge family was based on a real life musical family called the cowsills who had a string of hits of their own,but didn't have the sex appeal of david cassidy. andy gibb (younger brother of the bee gees) was another one. tragically his life was cut short at 30 from a virus that caused heart inflammation. then there was one hit wonders the de franco family with cute and cuddly tony singing lead on their hit "heartbeat it's a love beat". that whole era was full of sugary sweet teen idols, but looking back it was a very innocent and special time in music history.
