For the record, it doesn't seem as if Viola realized she was torpedoing Jean's relationship, because she didn't realize that Jean had a girlfriend who wasn't Thistle. The text she conversation she saw was from "Girlfriend" who she assumed was Thistle (who wasn't in the room at the time). I *think* the "Warhammer Emergency, Bring Painting Supplies"...was her attempt to resolve conflict not create it (hence why she said, "Conflict Resolution"). I think she was thinking, oh, if he gets his painting supplies that will make this easier and that will help resolve the conflict. But then deleted the message because that would have been her intervening rather than letting it happen. I also think she deleted the DM...not because she was shady, but because she thought it would delete the DM and so it wouldn't have been sent. I don't think she would have sent the text if she had realized that Girlfriend was not Thistle.
@Middcore
Жыл бұрын
I'd like to think that you're right and this isn't just Viola manufacturing drama to have something to write about, which would be shitty of her, but I guess I'm not sure why she really thought Thistle bringing the Warhammer stuff would resolve any conflict? The episode description does say Viola "takes drastic action" and your version doesn't really seem drastic to me. I don't know how to interpret her desperate attempt to get back inside as soon as she sees the actual girlfriend showing up. If she really didn't realize that "girlfriend" meant someone else it seems like she had a chance to at least try to head off the disaster there in the driveway before Jean came out?
@Middcore
Жыл бұрын
@@troopersjp I agree that Viola didn't know Jean had an irl girlfriend before... She found out by looking at his phone. But I'm still forced to come to the conclusion she then saw an opportunity to intentionally engineer a situation where Jean's irl love life and in-game love life would clash so she'd have fodder for her project. I agree that her apparent surprised "Oh shit" reaction when Becca shows up is puzzling. It's the only thing that makes me second guess my interpretation of events. But I can't make sense of any part of what she does if she believed "girlfriend" meant Thistle. I think part of the point of the whole bit right before that where Viola offhandedly talks about her parents paying for everything and then gets super defensive about it is to show that she's a very privileged, self-centered person right now. She's not actively malicious, but she doesn't think too much about how what she says or does impacts others. It seems also like maybe in her mind she's justifying to herself what she did by trying to get Jean and Thistle together irl.
@troopersjp
Жыл бұрын
@@Middcore (I hope you don't mind me continuing the conversation with you, I'm enjoying working through the contradictions with you) So, first off, I totally agree that the parents paying for everything was meant to show that she is privileged and self-centered. Also, she mentioned not having any friends and she seems like she has very little emotional IQ. Her advisor called her initial argument elitist...which it was. But I think, as you said, that she isn't acting out of maliciousness...but out of...well...that sort of unthinking privilege where she hasn't yet really realized the ways in which her actions impact others...or that others might have different struggles. I read her that way as well. I think this is going to be part of her character arc, you know? So, I agree that it doesn't make sense that she didn't get the Girlfriend wasn't Thistle when she picked up the phone. But also that her "Oh Shit" reaction doesn't make sense if she did know. We do know that she thought that Thistle and Jean were together and was surprised when she found out they weren't (also, I think the series thus far tried to make the audience think Thistle and Jean were a couple). So it is a bit of a puzzling conundrum. I think it could go either way, I guess. Maybe she thought Jean was cheating on Thistle? Maybe she didn't realize Girlfriend wasn't Jean. Maybe she did. It is a bit unclear. But...I don't think she was framed as a malicious schemer who intentionally messed with her friends in a self conscious and knowing villanous way. I think they still want the audience to have sympathy for her. So I think they must be having it be...less cut and dry?
@Middcore
Жыл бұрын
@@troopersjp For what it's worth, up until now I didn't have a vibe Jean and Thistle were together, in or out of game. When Viola is initially trying to talk the group into letting her join Yorick says something snide to the effect that Jean will vote whichever way Thistle votes, so at that point I thought maybe he was implying Jean has a crush on Thistle, but I didn't notice it ever being followed up on. With his min-maxing style of gameplay Jean didn't seem like the type to me to be interested in having an in-game relationship. But it's possible that I overlooked something.

honestly, if resolution conflict was too hard of a topic, she could just pivot to how does one seperate game from reality and how it effects relationships, citing her own game along with other social based games monopoly and risk, hell even halfbrick studio's banned board game. she can even expand on this by looking at the type of social mask one wears while playing a fictional persona and how it may differ or reflect one's own intentions or feelings, such as looking into why a person may play a character very similar or very different from themselves in the real world. this could also be used to look into online spaces and how the internet and online games have made it easier than ever to not only play with others but to befriend them, and how anonymity on the internet is both kept and loss by how much information is shared to someone you've never met. she could even look at the inverse of when a person expresses their persona to a person in their real life, kinda like how a youtuber tells their family about their full-time job as a content creator, and if that youtuber were to reveal their face, how does that effect their online persona and their real life persona. she could even look into when a game is no longer fun, looking at the amount of work, time and dedication that goes into building a character, setting, or organizing an entire table and figure out why does the idea of playing this game out way the amount of effort that goes into the game? just spitting some ideas

The problem is, her advisor is a very bad advisor. He should be...actually advising her. And he is not. He is...bad at his job.

"honestly, if resolution conflict was too hard of a topic, she could just pivot to how does one seperate game from reality and how it effects relationships" Well, the problem is her advisor is big on conflict resolution. She only picked it because she saw the book on his desk, and he probably only approved the idea because it's his specialty.
