Hey everybody. Some of you are unable to subscribe or turn on notifications for this channel, and when you try, you see a message about content made for kids (even though we made sure to mark it as NOT for kids). This is apparently a pretty common issue as I see other content creators complain about it. I've reached out to KZitem support for help. In the meantime, if you can subscribe, but not turn notifications on (the bell button), you could try unsubscribing, resubscribing, and hitting the bell button again. Thanks for your patience.

I agree with Glenn about the vibe in 2007/8 and John about the downfall of race relations. I was just talking to a friend recently about 2007ish, give or take a year. It had nothing to do with Obama, but just a feeling in the air. It was like a racial reckoning, but within the ‘black community’. I remember the funeral for the ‘n-word’, the animated series Boondocks posed the idea that what if MLK didn’t die but was in a coma and woke up in modern times and the episode about BET. Actually, many important episodes. I’m not saying the show was super impactful, but the vibe at the time allowed that show to get on the air. I was around 30 years old in 2007 and I remember writing a blog on MySpace about how optimistic I was because people were being outspoken about our own role and responsibility for shaping the future, regardless of the past. Then social media happened. That was the beginning of the end. I do agree Obama squandered an opportunity and made things worse. But I also believe he was reacting to and playing for social media. Without social media, the shit he said and did in response to viral stories would not have happened.

With all due respect to John McWhorter: while it may be possible that Sharpton is to some extent genuine in his expression of his care for those families, it is also possible that he is (as with perhaps most celebrities and politicians) a sociopath. It is absolutely bone-chilling to discover that someone you've believed was genuine was merely acting in a calculated manner to achieve selfish goals. I've had the fortune/misfortune of working with genuine sociopaths. It is not something easy to sniff out until you've been burned a few times. From then on, there's something very intangible, yet potent that can be sensed in a sociopath. It's like an interpersonal black hole of sorts. You begin to feel - for no particular reason - a gravitational pull into something like an utter void. It's nothing they say or do, just a sense you get when you pay attention to them interacting with people.

For those under 35, the Culture War in the US has been going on since I was a kid in the 80s and probably long before from what I've read from old articles and books. James Michener wrote a novel in 1963 about "woke" before the term was coined called The Caravans. The protagonist searches for a teenage girl from a wealthy Philadelphia suburb who converted to Islam and ran off to Afghanistan to marry an Iman in a harem. Michener in all his subtlety shows a type of anti-Wesrern snobbism among the elite that has always been a thorn in the side of free societies.

A thousand yeses to Glenn for his take on Obama and Sharpton and holding people accountable to their contributions to our new social order. We would simply not be here if 1) Sharpton had not laid the thick, concrete ground for this divisiveness in the 80s and 90s, during a time when civil rights philosophies were ripe for taking root in parallel with increased inclusiveness on TV, film and music, in people's social and work lives, what we'd all learned well from Dr. King--Sharpton almost single-handedly paved over that national progress via lying and manipulation for his own power trip--and 2) Obama handling the police events starting in 2012 in the worst possible way, and contrary to the speech he gave at the convention that made us all think he would further progress in this country instead of dial it back. Sure, the events were amplified by social media transforming how national events were digested by the public, but as Glenn is saying, that made no difference in what Obama should have done as leader of this country, and how relatively simple a path it would have been for him to say the right words (Wasn't he good with words? Didn't he even say such words at the Dem convention a while back?) and argue the case for peace, understanding, unity and real justice, and directing this country in a way that would have materially improved the lives of communities in need, especially Black lives. If anyone could have done it, had the ability to do it, it was him. He failed and this country regressed horrifically. And yes, there were others of us who noticed that Obama had accomplished zilch in his time working as a politician leading up to the presidency, and that his books were full of bluster covering for a thin resume. To forgive those men because time has passed and they've been laying low as they enjoy the fruits of their careers (i.e. $$$$$) is almost a leap in logic.

I agree fully on Rev. Al Sharpton damaging American unity/relationships and partially with former President Obama on the social unrest from 2009 onward. With regards to the latter, my criticism of his handling of race relations or social unrest is maybe unwillingness to look at it on a case by case basis (Trayvon Martin vs. Michael Brown vs. Philando Castile vs. Terrance Croucher). Additionally, yes more police support could be given while at the same time highlighting issues/lack of trust/corruption/malfeasance with police. However, my criticism of those that criticize the former president is that there seems to be an unwillingness to recognize that a significant portion of the American population has either an adversarial or damaging relationship with the police (not racial but institutionally). I'm not going to run through the history of African-Americans in this country but I will ask, do people expect that distrust or fearfulness to evaporate? I'd argue whether it's the police or CRT, the greatest influencers of young black minds would be their parent/grandparents. If there are generational cautionary tales of police across the country and then we witness adversarial/uncooperative relationships with police among a small segment of the African-American population that is concentrated in urban cities, did we expect the issue to just magically disappear with former president Obama? Even Senator Tim Scott went to the floor (I believe after Philando Castile) and detailed his experiences with police. I do agree with Professor McWhorter that a lot of this has to do with social media and then I would posit that it is also a generational issue. I'll compare this with the Civil Rights movement where Dr. King and older leaders advocated non-violence, communication, and forgiveness with those who were younger and were open to violence. Or look at the 1994 crime bill. It's a bit disingenuous to blame the current president when former President Trump supported it back then and it had widespread support in African-American communities across this nation. Again here it seems support was concentrated among older people whereas there was hesitancy among young people. It is generation y & z that brought this to the forefront in 2019 and criticized Joe Biden before former President Trump brought it up. Looking at this it just seems to me that not everything was as rosy as we like to picture it. It just wasn't discussed. Bill Maher makes a good point that we talk about politics and policies almost 24/7 now. And with the airing of actual and perceived grievances or a declining lack of trust for police (and a ton of other institutions), unity among the American people is fraying. Could former President Obama have made a stronger case for unity and understanding (waiting for the facts)? Yes, of course and he should have. Do I believe that it would have made as big a difference as others have vocalized? No, I do not. As mentioned earlier, with the advent of social media and coming of age of younger generation y/generation z Americans, the issues and how we approach them (talk about them) has changed. It's here too stay for the time being. I think the way forward is best articulated by rapper Killer Mike. Rigorously evaluate potential hires, extend training to at least a year, if possible hire people from the community, direct more funds to things like the Police Athletic Leagues (PAL), establish and reinforce robust accountability when issues arise. And there needs to be more accountability and leadership among the Black leadership class. And hopefully a decrease in the politicization of crime and where crime occurs. You do have black leader across this nation (often Pastors and esteemed community elders) doing the work of inspiring young African-Americans to do more and reduce all conflict/confrontation/violence. They've been doing this work for decades w/o fanfare, sometimes support, or recognition from a wide swath of American politicians. It's just a shame that despite there being a problem that violence get politicized by one side and then there seems to either be inaction or an unwillingness to address the problem by the other side. Meanwhile African-Americans in these communities are left w/o advocates they trust along the political spectrum. If people want to make a difference, instead of promising new programs that never materialize or change with new politicians, why not support people on the ground already doing the work? Evaluate the effectiveness and efficacy of these community engagement programs and support where you can.

@@sham55 two main points. I think Obama didn’t address racism strong enough. He did specify with each case and condemn any rioting and looting associated with the protests strongly. I would love to see an example in which he didn’t. He was correct about the Skip Gates case and got hammered. You make an excellent point about blk leaders doing work on the ground being totally ignored. Blk civic and church leaders outnumber and have more impact than the small number of BLM chapters. I’m one of those ppl. Instead of acknowledging and actually joining me in my work I see ppl online focus on Al Sharpton, BLM, Kendi ect. Those kids are fully aware that ppl don’t care about them. Glen and McWhorter will never platform the millions of ppl like me but will critique NHJ and Kendi. It’s so frustrating to be a blk man putting in work in the communities ppl complain about and be totally ignored. I see ppl talk about Chicago ect but won’t take 5 minutes to write a letter offering condolences to the victims family. Yet will go online and talk shit about blk ppl every day. Blk kids are seeing ppl go out of there way to pretend to care about them only to code their racism. With all the race talk by non blk Americans you would think community centers and church groups would be packed with volunteers. Yet these ppl complain about identity politics but clearly show by their actions that they don’t identify as part of the communities in which they criticize
