After hearing that other god awful ted talk regarding school shooters and how they "aren't mentally ill" with no amount of real evidence or logic to back it up and went off and brought up irrelevant stuff, its refreshing to see someone actually put in the effort and look at the statistics and evidence gathered to truly address the issue and enlighten people on it. Mad respects for Clare, very well done and executed speech.

Mentally ill on a clinical sense is very different than mentally ill on a criminal sense, in the criminal sense, you are considered mentally ill if your actions don't seem to have a reason, a mass shooter posting a video named "the day of retribution" before commiting mass murder is implying that those people have done something to him which he wants to avenge, that in itself implyes reason and excludes him from claiming mental illness in the criminal sense.

@@ykMMD If your response to stress in the real world is to pick up a gun and mow down innocent people who did you no wrong, there is something mentally and functionally wrong with you. We all have moments where we feel overwhelmed and or purposeless but most of us choose to not harm others around us because of it. It's been a while since I've seen the talk in question but If I recall the entire point of it was to sort of try and make the audience understand that spree killers are just misunderstood and that we should try and understand the reason why they decided to pick up a gun. My contention is that it shouldn't even get to that in the first place. We should put more focus in spotting the warning signs and pushing them to get help and have better coping skills instead of fantasizing about killing people all the time.

From those who believe these events are staged to those who defend the mass-shooters and/or are conducting their own research. police should release all these school/mass shooters interrogation videos so students and teachers, bystanders know what to look for, a lot of the time you cant find info relating to the suspect and their state of mind how they are but watching the interrogation after the crime you can get a gist of who this person is even if theyre lying like in Nikolas Cruz case.

Besides the fact that most mass shooters were exposed, reporter etc. to authorities well before they did anything, you really think random kids can accurately assess their classmates let alone be trusted not to abuse this new power in order to ruin other kid's lives just for fun? Yeah give the fearful more power over other people, that will surely end well.

What concerns me about this particular line of research is that Psychopathy is often misdiagnosed as Autism. They can present similarly but the diagnosis sticks and then gets added to this kind of data and academic conclusions. It seems to me that it is much more likely that Psychopathy is the concern, not those who are Autistic.

The comments here about the way she speaks is simply hateful. It sounds like she has a thick Scottish accent and there is a problem with the mic. Give her a break. In light of what's happened recently with El Paso and Dayton, I think it's important to hear what she has to say. Many of these shooters have some form of disorder that makes it hard for them to cope with stress. They trigger easily and often it escalates out of proportions and leads to extremely violence. Criminal autism-a possible developing label that best describes these cases. If you know of someone who has exhibited these symptoms, you need to be aware.
@RoastedLocust

Yeah, I think she has a lovely Scottish accent. As for the shooters, I'm sure there are a wide range of reasons they do what they do. Violent fantasies and obsessions with serial killers/mass murders should be a warning sign though. That's not counting people who are obsessed with why serial killers/mass murderers do what they do.

@@RoastedLocustWhat an incompetent answer, considering the mass gun toting are done by local extremists, nihilists, and Nazis, for the most part. Study the lives and disordered minds of the young, male mass shooters with obsessive-compulsive, and autistic-with-Asperger disorders. Then, you’ll understand what the previous thinker is saying. Those who pray to Allah Who is God Almighty since ancient times do not tend to be mass shooters because our Faith says clearly that “Life is made sacred, unless for Just Cause.” If you study reversion to Islam stories, you will see the quality of intellectual people who choose Islam for their new Faith based on intelligence, Spiritual and Emotional Empathy, and high level knowledge/thinking skills.
