I was born in 1999, discovered Bloomfield by accident. Told my musician grandfather and he was astounded. He told me stories about sitting at the cafes in San Francisco watching Bloomfield and others live, it blew me away what a time to be alive.

I can't ever get through this one with dry eyes. Paul's singing every bit as powerful as harp playing which is absent in this one. Mike's playing is out of this world, not with fretboard gymnastics, but with feeling and power to match Paul's. The band behind is strong and masterful in accompaniment. I was fortunate to hear this band live several times at the Fillmore, the hardest working band ever. Unforgettable.

One of my favourite electric blues guitar solos of all time. He ruins it for us blues guitar players by playing a flawless emotional solo. He adds those certain Bloomfield chromatic notes that were his signature. One of the greatest and like Peter Green not as recognized as he should be. When Bloomfield was “on” he was something not of this world. There is an abandon or freedom to his playing that for me is hard to find these days. Wish he was still with us. There’s a new book out about him for all you fans that may not have known.

This is the song that inspired me to play guitar. It is still my favorite song and guitar solo of all time. Not only because of Michael's distinctive phrasing but because the band works together. Music is about feeling, not speed or technical ability. Bloomfield was the complete player.

One of the greatest recorded guitar solos. The song is terribly sad, and the guitar pleads with a lyrical beauty that begs to be allowed to finally r.i.p. The finality of this song is a way of understanding the finality of the unfortunate premature deaths of Paul Butterfield and Michael Bloomfield.

This is my pick for the most innovative, creative and overwhelmingly emotive blues solo ever put on record. To those who cite Peter Green's performance, all I can say is I love the Brits too, and PG really tears it up, but this shows a whole other dimension to the construction of a blues solo, using minor modalities to build tension and resolve it in perfect symmetry. Bloomer learned from everybody (especially Otis Rush and B.B.), but he brought his own genius. Sadly, his addictions kept him from growing musically from this point, and it was generally downhill from here. B.B's version is fantastic both for his playing and singing...really one of his best, imo.

+Lewis Dalven I like this version very much. Maybe this is a better BAND performance than any of Fleetwood Mac's versions, and maybe this version version is technically better than any of Greeny's. However, what Peter Green (who is 69 today) played on January 4, 1970 at the Fillmore West, is out of this World. For me, it's the greatest blues guitar solo in history.

Mike Bloomfield at his best right here. I had this LP when it came out back in the 1960s but I never really heard this song. I mean I played it and listened to it, but I never really heard it. Mike's work on this guitar is so deep and emotional, it went right over my head. His hands are barely playing, lightly touching the strings. It is all driven by his heart. Blows me away that someone can express so much emotion through a simple instrument .

I just got a new post on this and saw yours from long ago. I got the Bloomfield sound in my head at age 15 with the 1st PBBB album (play this loud…OK!) then on the trail for more of same “What’s Shakin’” with One More Mile…mind blowing stuff, also 1st exposure to Eric Clapton (by name…already had Yardbirds Rave- Up). Beano album soon followed with Have You Heard. So my ears were ready primed to hear this track when it arrived.

I agree. Bloomfield says more with fewer notes than any other blues solo I have heard. He tells the brutal story of loss with such sweet ferocity, that I could not help but clutch my body as I cried. I knew, no, I felt what he was saying. So glad the PBB did not get in his way. Another great example is Albert King's Personal Manager, though the horns obscure it a little, every note builds to a climax of such beauty and pain this listener felt disabled by tears and emotional exhaustion.

This is the equal of anything Bloomfield ever did and for sheer emotional power, it just can't be bested. I love the way Bloomfield bookends this song - he closes the tune with the same 3 notes he opens with (though in a different register). Looking at the comments here, i can see that I'm not alone in my ardor for this song and for Mike Bloomfield, perennially among the most underrated guitarists of the last fifty years. You can say he never fulfilled his promise, but this song alone shows otherwise. Gone far too soon, however. I have been listening to this song for over 50 years now and it still gives me goosebumps. Bloomfield just does everything right in this piece of music.
