Very nice! A couple people have mentioned worries about the amperage rating on the switch, and it's a very good point. If you're near the limit, you could still use everything you've got, but switch a high current relay or a contactor. One advantage to the relay or contactor is that you can disconnect both hot and neutral, rather than just one leg. That'll give you a little more isolation from lightning events when it's turned off.

The same I had in mind. Depending on the power consumption of the boxes (and there are a few sockets also integrated), the power and inductivities can be a problem to safely disconnect them. I would also recommend a relay for that... But all in all a really good idea :-)

A mate's son had the same sort of concerns about leaving his little workshops heater and compressor powered up over night. It was mainly about the wasted money of running the heater if he wasn't there, and the possibility that a leaking/burst air line could have the compressor running (And chewing through electricity) all night. He used an Arduino with a Bluetooth adapter, and wrote a program that runs on his phone (the technical sides of this is beyond me, but "Kids today" and all that. :) ). When he flicks the breaker on, the Arduino sees that and changes the state of something in the software on his phone via Bluetooth, then changes it back when the power breakers turned back off. The Arduino's powered from a separate circuit, but has a plug that goes into the same ring main as the heater and compressor, so it's always got power, but can tell if the other circuits live or not. If his phone goes out of Bluetooth range and that states not been switched back, it starts beeping a warning at him. He told me it's worked flawlessly since setting it up, except one time when he left his jacket hung up in his workshop with his phone stuffed in it's pocket. Apparently he HAD powered the high amp ring main down, but was so paranoid that he hadn't that he drove the 4 or 5 miles back to check (And grab his phone) at 9pm that night when he realised what he'd done. :D Personally, I'd have just fitted a little flashing white light that's pointing at the ceiling, and have it powered by one of the switched mains sockets. You wouldn't really notice it with the main workshop lights on, but as soon as you shut those off at the end of the day, you'd see the blinking light if you hadn't isolated that power circuit.

I've built a little circuit for a system with a lot of control switches lighting a little "OK to leave" light next to the door. If everything is in auto, the light is on. Saved a lot of stress! Did it after coming in to work one morning and finding 30cm of slurry covering the yard 🤣

One place I stayed in Germany took it a bit far and all the outlets shut off too, so nothing could charge when you were out. Had to defeat the intent with a dummy card unfortunately and just be sure to check the lights when I went out.

@@btodoroff The idea of also shutting down sockets is probably so that a malfunctioning device can't start a fire while you're away. e.g. a phone charging on a pillow (I still don't get why people stuff they're charging phone under their pillow ...), or even someone leaving the water heater running dry

Actually all of the shop is so well put together...and labled!!! (I have ADHD...I can only dream.) I def have shop envy, but if I had it, it would be filled with jewlery making supplies and yes even some things like you have. Second, the idea behind the idea this week is more important than the switch. We have to be more and more cognizant of what we are using and what we are doing. Really being mindful of our resources is critical now. Good on you for taking care of your shop!
