The Pecos Wilderness, Episode 11 - The Winsor National Recreation Trail was a 15.2 mile hike that took 2 days 1 night. I started at the Winsor Creek Trail Head in Cowles, New Mexico, and I camped at Spirit Lake. Day two, I hiked out to the Santa Fe Ski Basin. The fall colors of the aspen, oaks and the undergrowth were extremely vibrant. It was a beautiful trip in the Santa Fe, National Forest of New Mexico.
Special Note:
I would like to apologize about the illegal campfire that I had on this trip. I had looked up the fire restrictions on the Santa Fe National Forest Web Page just before I left for this trip, and I did not find the correct information. Therefore I was under the impression that fires were allowed. After the trip, I dug deeper in the "Alerts & Notices" section of the web page and found the correct information, and I found that I had erred. The campfire restrictions were at Stage I and prohibits the use of fires except in developed campgrounds.
The reason that I did not find the correct information is that the forest service did not post the information under fire restrictions. In stead, they had a link to a web page that is not even working now, and it did not even have the correct information at the time. I would like to say that I am a stickler for camping and backpacking in the most ethical way possible, and I made a mistake due to inconsistent posting of the fire restrictions on the Santa Fe National Forest Web Page. I will now have to now advocate that people call the ranger district that manages the land where you are traveling to ensure that the campfire regulations are not being broken. I would also like to advocate to the Forest Service that they post this information consistently and clearly in RED TEXT on the HOME PAGE of their site so that people can find this very important information without having to "dig" for it!
