I hold this film as a representation of where the fandom was in the year it came out. Because everything highlighted in the film was basically what I witnessed online for years starting in 1999.

I said similar things like this in my Dreamworks She-Ra essay, I'm saying it in my upcoming Tri-Star Godzilla essay, and I will say that in my next essay about Spider-Man: Lotus, but I think what documentaries like this show is that there seems to be a demand with fanbases to have creators and artists form parasocial bonds with them. Something I think is an incredibly bad and unhealthy idea. Creators don't owe anything to fans, really. Now, that doesn't mean that an artist SHOULDN'T "give the fans what they want" or that they can't take into account what fans want to see. It just means that a creator's decision to make their own thing regardless of what dan demand is, OR a creator's decision to make what the fans want are both valid and rational decisions. No more, no less. The only parts of the prequels I like are about haf of Revenge of the Sith, but even then I will always respect for George Lucas for the fact he was trying to say something with them and he wanted to give the trilogy its own identity. He's a very smart person and that is shown in his work EVEN IF it doesn't work out too well. That's why my opinions on Star Wars are more "scattered" in comparison to what you usually hear online. I have my problems with the Han/Leia/Lando/Endor part of RotJ, I overall like RotS, I loved TLJ, and hated RoS, but the common thread here is that the parts of Star Wars I like are the moments where it feels like the artist wants to say something in regards to the psychology of the characters and the political reflections of our worlds. I just hate this conclusion that people simply can't perhaps like or dislike what they see or advocate to help the industry of art via preventing greedy corporate practices from blocking free expression. No, we gotta make directors and screenwriters into the worst people imaginable because they had the audacity to say what they wanted instead of what fanbases demanded. Maybe that's why a lot of the anti-woke people all about that are so welcoming towards AI and want to see it replace actual artists. It just cobbles up what's already online and spits out a story without any human mind daring to perhaps take a risk or change things up a bit.

Want a better Star Wars documentary? Watch “A Disturbance in the Force”. It’s a documentary talking about the Star Wars Holiday Special, and while they rip it apart, it’s mostly harmless compared to this documentary. Plus it has Weird Al, Gilbert Gottfried, Kevin Smith and others to count so that’s a win in my book.

I'd never heard Lucas wanted the barely-teen Ahsoka to be more sexualized, or that he wanted her to be 11. It unfortunately isn't surprising when you read the story conference transcript for Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Lucas wanted Marion to be 11 when she had her affair with a 25 year old Indy. (Spielberg said she had to be older. George seemingly drew the line in the sand at Marion being 15, saying it wouldn't be "interesting" if she was 16 or older.)

I was 4 years old when the original Star Wars came out, and I can tell you SW fans have always been among the very worst. They have a tendency to always hate the latest SW film, especially if it has a Roman numeral in the title. For 16 years, from 1983-99 these "fans" hated Return of the Jedi with the same kind of passion you'd later see directed at the prequels. There was no internet back then, but they made their hate known in what was available at the time, mostly magazine articles. There was one article in particular, "50 Reasons Why Return of the Jedi Sucks" that I saw getting reprinted multiple times. In a weird way, I felt grateful to the prequels because these jerks finally stopped bashing Jedi.
@RazorRex

Kind like how felt when people stopped bashing on the prequels when the sequel trilogy came out (granted there are people still stuck in the past like WatchMojo and WhatCulture who still think bashing on the OT will change things). I think Return of the Jedi is the weakest of the OT, but that’s not to say I think it’s terrible.

As a 49 year old who grew up with the original trilogy - I was extremely disappointed with the sequels when they came out for a whole bunch of reasons - BUT, they did at least lead to The Clone Wars series and the other animated series, which are mostly excellent, and in a lot of ways fixed the problems I had with the prequel films - specifically turning Anakin from underdeveloped, lacking motivation and agency to the point I didn't care about him at all in the prequel films, into a truly tragic character. For me, The Clone Wars redeemed the prequels - but I did try to watch them again recently, and gave up part way through The Phantom Menace, skipped ahead to Attack of the Clones, which I also skipped through a lot of because it was so cringe inducing, and then watched most of Revenge of the Sith, only skipping over some of the worst bits of that - they did at least improve a bit as they went along. I've never seen this documentary and I won't bother with it - but given it was made 12 years ago when a lot of people were still feeling the disappointment, I can kind of understand why it was made, even though I'm not interested in watching it. I can understand how a kid who grew up with the prequels could have a nostalgic attachment to them - but as someone who went into them in my 20's at the cinema first run with so much hope and really wanting them to be amazing - all three times - they are just objectively pretty poorly written.

The prequels, for all their wrongs, had very solid EU material accompanying them and despite being hastly made, their overall story on paper is great. An ex slave who is presumed to be the chosen one falls to the dark side and becomes enslaved to Sidious after the Jedi order fails him. It's fine. The sequels had no overall vision or even an actual story to tell. They where made by a company which was constantly changing the scripts and you can TELL.
