Congrats!! I dont get how people are saying 1kg a week is some bullshit amount of weight loss lol. If you started at 220 thats a pretty standard 1% per week. Say 10lbs was water weight and 23lbs was fat and you get your 8% BF drop, only needing a 700 calorie deficit which you totally would have at 1800 calories
@HumbleDictator

@hjewkes I started lighter than that. 76kg. But yeah, I lost 1.2% a week on average until it slowed down to 0.5% a week. I'm starting to feel diet fatigued now so I have two weeks of maintenance then slow bulk for like a year.

This is hands down the best weight loss mindset talk I’ve ever heard. Thank you for all of these tips that go against the typical advice of doing trendy diet challenges, etc. As a very tired mom of three littles, those methods are really discouraging and pile on a bunch of guilt if you aren’t as hardcore as Jocko or David Goggins lol. This is SO helpful for adopting a healthier perspective. It doesn’t have to be soul crushing to be effective. 😂
@INTJames

Biggest mistake I see in people that are new to training is thinking they have to try really hard whether that's doing HIIT on the treadmill, burpees, going really heavy on lifts, doing crazy moves they see on Instagram etc. Things like these that use a ton of energy, generate a ton of fatigue, and feel like you're really training hard mentally. The more experienced know that it's not sustainable to do that 6 days a week for years and years. You don't need to kill yourself in the gym, just enough to create a stimulus. The sets and reps you plan into your program and execute weekly is where the growth in muscle or loss of fat will come from depending on your planned goal. You could maybe be making close to just as much progress as Goggins just planning it out the smart way. He'll be doing a ton of things at 3-4 in the morning for some reason since that's his style that keeps him motivated, and someone else can just train at a normal hour of the day for an hour or so daily and be right along side him. There's nothing he can possibly do any different from the textbook methods of changing body composition, he just chooses to execute it like a mad man for some reason. The tortoise and the hare make just as much progress, I think normal people like us that have jobs and children should definitely take the tortoise slow and steady route for longevity.

I've always found New Year's resolutions to be silly, particularly when people WAIT until January to start. I understand the holidays are difficult, but you can start whenever you have the gumption to. Just like you're saying, making some small changes to lead up to bigger changes is a good way to start. I know many people, friends, family, who just decide to let everything go for the entire holiday season and just "get back on track in January". Why not start your resolution right now, in November or December? Smaller things to get started? You can still enjoy the holidays and try to start getting in shape. Doesn't have to be all or none. Anyway, good info, as always, Mike. 👍

My wife and I started easing into meal prep a couple of weeks ago. If convenience is an issue in your diet, make it work for you. It's better to grab a prepared meal or snack out of the fridge or freezer than go out for junk food. Preparing it beforehand helps you keep how much you eat under control also. And if you get snacky, you can prepare those also.

I went from staying up all night, sleeping irregularly, eating crap, smoking crap and not exercising to the exact opposite of this. It did not happen over night. It was a 2 year transition with small improvements and mostly it started with a simple new years resolution of rock climbing 2 times a week. Minimum viable action is the best place to start. On a serious note: pairing certain lifestyle changes with weight loss should actually be great imo. I put weed down and it was stressful but it supercharged my diet effort and became integral. I ate less and was more active, it was a very good effort to pair with weight loss despite it being difficult to do concurrently at some points. The recent Dr. Lustig interview on Huberman about sugar provides a counterpoint to the Mike's diet soda and CICO perspective (which I've adopted and I use diet soda). It is making me reconsider a little bit. I have a feeling that Dr. Mike and Huberman don't entirely see eye to eye on their approaches. Ah yes, Mike just confirmed that in the video. But Dr. Lustig talks about human randomized control trials where diet soda was worse for weight and overall caloric intake. I also think there's something to be said about the precautionary principle.

January 1st is January 1st because it is halfway between major points in the year in regard to agriculture in ancient societies. Basically, it's about halfway between the beginning of the Spring and the end of Summer (or the beginning of Fall and the end of Winter if you want to look at it that way). But it is still a flawed system. The Earth completes a full orbit of the sun 6 hours AFTER midnight. That's why every 4 years we add an extra day to the calendar (6 hours X 4 hours = 24 hours). But it's not exactly 6 hours. So, every 100 years, there is no leap year. There are a ton of other adjustments, made by an entire day at a time, but it gets boring after a while, and they occur across larger timeframes than people care about.

I know there was a recent HIT video where the final slide was kind of on this, but that was more how to incorporate more failure into an RIR routine. I'd love to know how to design a fully fledged program. I think the worry is that you might (correctly!) be irritated at the Menzter resurgence. But not all of us are dogmatic Mentzerites. I can only speak for myself but I'm the kind of person that has to change the whole diet at once or I will most likely fail. I find it easier to cope with the fact that this (the diet) is my life now instead of having snacks every so often. To me it's like you're not fully commiting and leaving a way out for yourself. And I tend to eventually take the more preferable option, aand then fail.

If that's how you work, you could give yourself a timeframe - like 4 weeks. Tell yourself that you must STOP at the 4 week mark, as you know your plan has been proven, by your own history, to be unsustainable. This gives you four weeks to come up with something that is suitable long term. It might help you to think more rationally and critically about your next move, if you feel that you're achieving something dramatic in the short term.

@@Denidrakes69 Don't get me wrong wasn't really a complaint. More like a statement that I need to do things differently than taking my time and ease into it. I've also tried what you suggested and doesn't really do it for me either :) The problem was a lack of long term plan, like you mentioned, and changing my overall daily diet. I'm currently 6 weeks in with a solid plan for maintenance and what I want long term. Or at least as solid as I can get it and seeing good results. Slow and steady but relatively strict. My mind and body just react better to that, giving them little to no wriggle room :)

@@nekonamu3953 I understand that. The greatest tip, in my opinion, is to know yourself, what motivates you and what weakens you. Sometimes it's not other people that you need to meet where they are, but meeting yourself where you are.

I would like to hear your opinion about people like me, who work mostly night shifts... sleep is a very important thing,yeah, but at night,which is a difficult reality for me and people like me. please make a video about how people who work night shifts can progress if possible. I personally have been training for several years with relatively good results, however, I see and I feel that this is not it... and the reason is that I work at night, which I can hardly change. I believe there are many people who are in the same situation as me.. and would like to know how we can maximize progress in the gym with this lifestyle or those jobs that require working overnight

I like all this advice, I'll throw out one little thing that's worked for me when I diet. I do one day of fasting to start, it's like a system reset. It helps me slide into healthy eating mode. It's annoying but it works for me - also added benefit, makes it feel like my stomach shrinks. Not sure if it is actually happening, but I find that a 24 hour fast helps once I come off it with the portion control. Doesn't take as much to feel full, but it might be in my head. But then after that just watch portions, sugar, and keep track of your calories. You can honestly eat what you want as long as you are tracking it all.

I got to say i reached my weight goal back in November, it took me 1 year and 11 months to lose 44kg (90ish pounds, 35% from original weight) and a lot of what you said applied to my learning journey after my many failed attempts. I would add two things: - track what i was doing help me so much, initially i was just tracking exercise then food etc. But just the fact of tracking kept me honest with myself. Ho that is working, ho tjat is where i slcked a little bit and the results shown. - check your motivation, in previous failed attempts someone asked how motivated was I, I said 7/10, her brutal feedback was if you are not at 9 or 10 you wont be able to push through, she was right. This video would have helped me avoid a lot mistakes but maybe not as I was not ready to hear it. Don't know. But it resonated so much with my experience i had to comment. Sorry for the long one.

In Thailand, loas, and Cambodia Jan 1 happens in April. So if you screw up your resolution just fly to another country that has a different new year, there's probably like 5 different ones!

I love the discussion into the whole "Spartan mindset programs".... Even as someone who throws those in with some regularity, I cringe when someone says, "Yeah, I'm gonna do 75 Hard starting in January to lose weight!" Uh, no, you probably won't. In fact, if I could go back and tell myself any one thing back in '07 when I finally started getting my crap together, it would be to not try to do it all at once. If I could tell myself 2 things, I'd also tell myself that the USDA is full of 💩, and that 2,000 calories is super arbitrary and, so, 1,000 calories a day is NOWHERE near enough for a late 20s construction worker! Thanks for the great vids, Dr. Mike!
