If I'm going to have a better garden in my second year than in my first, my second year garden should be amazing! I've learned a lot from you two and a few other KZitemrs. I've always loved outdoor activities but never bothered with a vegetable garden before. It's been immensely satisfying and also great therapy and exercise. Thanks for all that you do. Your show is educational AND entertaining! 👍🏽

Mentoring is the best way to learn to garden. I'm old and have been gardening all my life. I learned from my grandmother and mother. Now I'm teaching/mentoring my 10 yr granddaughter to garden. It's a skill set that important to pass down to later generations. New gardeners would benefit from a mentor or mentoring program.

Very good advice for beginners, today's new gardeners are at an advantage with KZitem channels such as yours. Since 1977 , I took advantage of purchasing different garden books for my garden library . PBS tv ran one of the first garden shows every week called "Crockett's Victory Garden, " followed by the book by the same name. One of the best gardening books for anyone is still "Joy of Gardening" by Dick Raymond, which came out in 1982 and is still around for sale used. Vidalia onions have yet to appear up here in N.H. Good natured rumor up here is....Georgia is the Vidalia Capitol ! Thanks for the video.....

Thank you for this segment with tips for the beginner home gardener. My question is does planting marigold's, around your veggies keep pests away? If so where should they be planted in with your small veggie garden? My garden is 21 1/2 x 18 this the length on both sides. Also if you could explain the impoas well as define some important key components of gardening. Such as Cultivation, Irrigation, and Tilling. 💜⚜️
@gardeningwithhoss

Some say that marigolds can help keep pests away from vegetables by repelling nematodes and Mexican bean beetles. Marigolds emit a strong fragrance that can deter many pests, including aphids, nematodes, and tomato hornworms. You can plant marigolds around the perimeter of your garden or interplant them among your vegetables. When choosing marigolds for pest control, it's important to get a strong-scented variety. French marigolds are the most effective for pest control

I live in Arizona and Bermuda grass is everywhere when I want to get rid of it I plowed the ground once I cover it with black plastic and try to keep it from getting any water if you're in Arizona you want to do it before the monsoon I haven't had any grass growing for for 10 yrs. Dang ! You pulled those thoughts straight out of my head. I not only firmly believe that Everybody has a Super Power at something, but has spoke about it for many years ! Unfortunately some people, for what ever reason, never seems to find what that is. I, like you, found out early that I had the ability to repair almost anything if given enough time and materials. Don't like Tooting my own horn because of the my previous statement, but I did work for a Fortune 500 company that did not hire anyone who wasn't good at their job, enough said. THOSE ONIONS are BOSS. Don't know what it is but Georgia makes some Darn Fine Onions, pretty sure those growing them has a lot to do with it.

We plant edible marigold flowers, one plant in each corner or at the end of each row. My understanding is that flowers help encourage beneficial insects and discourage harmful insects and slugs (plant/flower scent). Do you plant flowers near your garden areas for these benefits? Any edible flower suggestions other than marigolds? We have grandchildren (6 mos to 7 yrs) whom I encourage to help in the garden. They love it!!!

I'm having a problem with my seedlings. The seeds germinate then the plants begin to wilt and die. I see gnats flying around the soil. Could they be the problem?
@theopeterbroers819
4 жыл бұрын
Most likely sciarid mosquitos / fungus gnats. Their larvae start by eating organic matter in the soil, and don't stop when they encounter a root. - You should first lower the amount of moisture in the soil, since wet conditions are an egg-laying gnat's favourite. Drying out the soil will help alot, but will also kill your seedlings, so this is not really an option. - Start bottom watering your seedlings, instead of top-watering. This will help keep the surface dry a little longer. Sadly, the gnats will find a way to the bottom also. - Use yellow sticky traps to catch at least a percentage of adult gnats. Since an average female gnat lays X eggs, X being a pretty large number, this will not entirely solve your problem. - Maybe (but that is now too late) sow in a non-organic substrate like vermiculite. Or put a thin layer of vermiculite or perlite on top of your seeds, instead of soil. - Fifth, there are insecticides like neem oil that will kill fungus gnat larvae. Non-organic ones too, obviously. Consult your pesticide authority / local extension service which are permitted and effective. - I also remember seeing mention somewhere on the internet of certain nematodes that could infect and kill those gnat larvae. But that would be the most expensive option.
@gardeningwithhoss

Sounds like fungus gnats. We've started using perlite on top, which is supposed to help with that.

I think it's important for new gardeners to expect failures in the first year. Everyone experiences them, even in their 10th year. Now, the issue is going to be pressure. Excellent show, guys! And y'all are sure right about new gardeners. I've been helping a couple of people get a garden started, and Lord have mercy! It's so hard to have to tell someone that they have to wait before they plant things down here. It's fixin' to get really hot here in Florida, and it's too late to plant a lot of things here. Spinach, lettuce cabbages, etc, are just about done here. You might can plant them in the Fall and pray we don't get a really cold November/December, but Spring veggies just ain't happening now. We might be able to get one more round of bush beans, or rattlesnake pole beans might make, but its not too likely if they're not in the ground already. Folks got to think about what can take the heat, and that's the hardest thing I had to learn when I first started gardening here. As for getting a lot of food out of a small garden, once someone learns when to plant what, they can grow a LOT of good food. I'm living proof of that. You folks have helped me to maximize my yields dramatically! God willin', this year is going to be even better! Now, for the tomatoes. Have you guys taken a look at the Tachi tomato plants? Mine, so far, are seriously out performing my Brickyards and Bella Rosas. I'm keeping track and will let y'all know how they do.

I've told many people that what I grow is seasonal, and just because you see it in the store doesnt mean it can grow here, in Florida. Many have asked about my spinach, told them to come back and ask again in October November and they give me a confused look. It turns into a learning experience. But like they said each year you learn something and you get better

Love the show! I garden in small beds, no till. Living in an apartment and just moved in but working on getting beds going so we can grow about a row just outside the fence. In north TX I know we are a little behind, but going to get it caught up. Any suggestions for a couple of things that will be good in a pot on the patio and give good production? Trying to use everything the dog won’t run on.

Ya'll tickled me talking about neighbors in general. And picking on Alabama. I had a neighbor move in a few years ago on a couple of acres searching for the Country life. First thing he did was put up "no trespassing" signs, then put up a chain link fence and put a barking dog in it. None of that bothered me much until he got one of those power company lights on a pole that burns all night long. I like to sit on my front porch at night and that light is 300 yards away but it bothers me. I let him know but he was concerned about "security", so he said. Anyway, ya'll tickled me again when you started talking about Mulberries. Because I went out near my property line and planted a row of mulberries. He drove a white pickup truck and his wife had a yellow car. You know where that went. He came to me complaining about the Mulberries because of the bird droppings. I told him I planted the Mulberries to screne out his dang night. Well, that night light got gone the next day.

What happened to the mole berry story? I still grinning on that one Travis. We do have mulberry trees in Ks possibly imported by birds or other aviators. Dennis GO USN

I have been told that if you fertilize the same plot of land continuously (like you would during a garden season) it will "breakdown" the soil and will cause future plants to not do so well. Have you heard of this? If so, what are your thoughts?
@gardeningwithhoss

There can be some consequences of using too much synthetic fertilizer as it creates a high "salt" content in the soils. That's why we like to use compost as well as the fish emulsion so that we don't rely on the inorganic stuff completely.

Guys, I’m new to your channel, enjoying all your information. Question for you, I’ve been gardening for twenty plus years, this year I’ve had several neighbors ask me to till a new garden for them. I haven’t charged them a penny, but now I have others asking for me to do this, what would be a fair price for a 20 x 20? My new Grillo, with a rotary plow and tiller attachment are getting a work out. I’ll be placing a order soon, thanks

$30 to $40 an hour seems like a fair price considering the wear and tear on your equipment as well as your time.

Corn would work, but you need at least three rows for good pollination.

I have to tell you that Irene about choked, laughing about the comment that customers need to double check their shipping address. Irene makes “things” for historic reenactors, and she’s had customers contact her in a panic. Sometimes we can accommodate them. Sometimes it’s too late. One customer didn’t change her shipping address and it went to her ex 😁 Shipping is entertaining! Take care guys.

I have two 5x10 raised beds and two 20 gallon buckets between them. I have tomatoes, squash, cucumber, watermelons started from seeds indoors. I plan to plant okra seeds also. You can plant a variety of crops in a small area as long as you know how wide the plant spreads. I stuffed my garden a few years ago and could not get in the bed. So now I have more varieties and less quantities. 1 or 2 plants of each variety.

Travis I am not a Alabama native, I was born and raised in north Florida , but have been living in southeast Alabama since 2001. You can knock the Tide and the War Eagles all you want because I'm a Gator fan. Yeah I know you guys don't care much for the Gators either lol. Is it to late to plant my sweet corn? We've always planted it in March, but I had to wait for space.

To kill crabgrass I solarize my beds every 4 - 5 years. 12' x 50' painter's plastic is $12 at Lowes. I weigh down the edges of the plastic, leave in place for 30 days. It kills plant roots and weed seeds. I usually don't have a weed problem for 2 - 4 years.
@gardeningwithhoss
4 жыл бұрын
That's a good way to do it. You can even pull back the tarp and till the area mid-tarping to further reduce the weed seed bank.

I wonder if the tarp and till would work for strangle vine, bindweed, wild morning glory. I've heard it call all those and more. I have been fighting this S**ff for 12 years and I'm loosing the battle. I have poisoned it, it just got bigger, I've pulled it and made sure it didn't get anywhere near the ground. No success. Now I have noticed that when I had a new leach line put in last year it is much less aggressive in that area this year. I have just given up and moved the garden twice now. Any advise you can give me would be greatly appreciated. This stuff is even coming up in my driveway now.

I planted Clemson spineless okra on April 5th and it has not done well. The new leaves are beginning to yellow. It is in a raised bed with good soil and Osmocote fertilizer. I live in Birmingham Alabama, and we got that awful storm last Sunday. Could that heavy rain be affecting my okra?

We will be getting more, just not sure on a definite timeline. Hopefully we'll have more in a few weeks. You can use any water-soluble fertilizer through the injector. Might be able to find something at the local box store if you don't mind going there.

one thing i believe you should have mentioned to new gardeners is please check your Frost dates, some northerner cant plant any of those mentioned on what you would plant if you had to plant now on a 20x20. may have some people throw that in and get a frost and not be to happy not realize what has happend .
