The wave has energy, tons of it. It is pushing you forward, sort of. You’re taking advantage of water’s surface tension and gravity as well. The surface tension of the water, and some amount of buoyancy, keeps you on top of the water, while gravity pulls you down the wave. Your body weight is being pulled down the wave. The energy in the wave is constantly lifting you up at a diagonal angle, while gravity is pulling you down. These two vertical forces effectively cancel out, and all you’re left with is a forward vector (the forward portion of the upward diagonal force of the wave). This forward vector comes from the fact that you’re not just falling. You’re SLIDING down the wave, just like a hill. The only difference is that this hill is moving. Of course, friction and drag will slow you down and stop you, so you see these guys “pumping” to get more speed. Think of it like this. You’re on a snow slope on a sled. You sit down and start sliding. What is doing this? Gravity. But gravity pulls you down, not forward, so how are you moving forward? The ground (snow) is resisting your downward motion. Because the hill is slanted, it is exerting a force that is not vertical. It is exerting a force at 90* to the slope. So, if it’s a 45* slope down to the right, it is pushing you up and right, while gravity is just pushing you down. The up portion of the ground is canceled out by the down of the gravity (plus some extra since it was offset by 45*, which reduces its amplitude). The sideways portion of the vector is what gives you horizontal speed. It is slowed by a backward force exerted by friction. This is the same thing on a wave, but the energy in the wave is pushing you up constantly, so you’re not actually losing altitude like when sliding down a hill. Basically, the vertical axes are totally nullified, and you just get a horizontal product vector. I hope this makes sense. It would be much easier to explain with a drawing. I also hope it’s 100% accurate. I haven’t taken physics in 20 years, so I may be rusty, but I’m pretty sure that’s spot on, if poorly explained.

Are you sure you study physics, I’m not. I did study physics. The waves lifting you up giving you potential energy and you are pointing your surfboard down and converting that potential energy into motion, or kinetic energy, and as well, Frittering Away some of that energy as friction, the board sliding along the water surface. I’m pretty sure you didn’t study physics.
