Bought this axe of Owen Jarvis ( / elemental4rce ) and its something I have been looking for a long time, 3lb head, 27'' handle. They don't make them like this anymore.
Glad I saw this, just won an auction on ebay for a brades criterion n°3 axe. Since I am a woodworker I dont mind making a handle myself, it is a lot of fun

What a little ripper you have there. I have a 3 lb Brades Cockatoo axe in the some condition but I am to scared to use it in case I over strike and destroy the handle. You can not beat the feel off the handles on early axes but there very rare in useable condition. I am glad you got it.

Nice to see new vids. I was just doing a bit of bucking yesterday on a section of maple ~12" diameter, and I ended up gravitating to the Husqvarna A2400 (even over my Basque axe) that I bought after your review. It has exceeded expectations. My son had to split a bunch of seasoned locust wood a few weeks ago, and he said the Husky was better than any of the various mails and splitting axes I let him borrow. Take care.

Hey Ben: I recently acquired a vintage Hytest Challenger 4.5# in that same condition. Green paint 95% intact with factory bevel and head dimensions. It even has the original Spotted Gum handle with the paint still present on the top of the kerf. I did remove the original painted wedge and replace it...just to tighten everything up. I paid well under a hundred dollars including shipping from Aus. to the US. So...decent deals do still exist. Of course...living in the states...I have an embarrassment of choice when it comes to hickory handles...so I never buy new axes. In my opinion...with few exceptions...they just have no soul! I've looked at a lot of Brades over the years...but I've never found one in "like new" condition. Congratulations...they certainly are beautiful axes!

Great video! I put a 28” handle on a 3 pound Evansville Expert head I got for $15 (and with minimal wear). All in all, I must say it is my go to axe for most things.

good morning Ben, today being October 19, 2019, I [just] ordered another 2,4kg competition racing axe from Mr. Jauregi personally minutes ago per email. I'll keep you up to date.

I am partial to the Walters myself, an old Canadian brand that stopped making axes in the early 1970s. I have only seen a couple of examples and own one, a small maybe 2lb head and the steel is exceptionally hard but seems tough as well unlike many Gransfors Bruks. It sits in a custom birch handle right now made by a friend of mine.

anything with convex cheeks that isn't worn is a good find. unfortunately anything in that condition is hard to get at a reasonable price

Reminds me of my first axe which was a Brades Kent pattern 3lb on that size handle it was lovely. The handle had been hung crap on it but was lovely. Now its on a 36" as a "Walking axe" as the gent called it. That thing looks fantastic.

Performs brilliantly! It's definitely the original handle. I don't think it's ever seen action. It was most likely left outside or one the floor in a shed. when i first had it before cleaning it up one side of the handle showed signs of weathering and the head had some minor surface rust which took some of the paint with it. I really doubt this Brades was ever used! I'm eager to find something similar for myself now.

Coming back to this video to check out the 3lb brides. Just bought a 3 or 3 1/2 lb elwell in the same pattern looks like, only one I’ve seen in my time into axes was wondering if you’ve seen many 3 lb English made axes with Yankee style patterns? I’m aware there are tonnes of Kent pattern 3lbers but haven’t seen many Yankee pattern 3lb english made axes.

they are basically identical to the basque axes in geometry just with a poll and slightly shortened edge length as a result. Much better than elwell IMHO

Are you 195cm tall or is the haft on the shortish side for what you'd typically find with a 3 pound head? It looks like a fine fit for you in any event.

@@benscottwoodchopper so a little bit of both lol! Is that more common for axes in the UK? You usually get a longer handle with something that weight here. Hell, you know, you have one of the big council Jerseys.

Very happy with my stocksaw, single buck was meh and underhand chop went pretty shit. I ground my own axe and experimented a bit making it cut chestnut (the only wood i had to test on) and it ended up not chipping properly in poplar, was putting in 12 hits rather than 4 to remove chips. Learnt a lot for next year and enjoyed myself greatly. Very different being up on a stage
