I've been trying to adopt a senior cat, but got denied. I have a job. The only problem is I have an 8-4:30 job and I've been denied a couple of times for having a job where I'll have to leave the cat alone for 8 hours a day. Has anyone else had this happen?

I have three pits, all adopted. My first girl I adopted when she was 8 years old. She had been abandoned three times and was on the shelter for 3 1/2 years after that. She had all kinds of behavioral issues and severe anxiety. I feel like she saved my life! I suffer from depression and she senses my moods. She comforts me by staying glued to me, giving kisses, or presenting me with her favorite toy. She is everything to me!

I was looking for a German Shepherd and searched and searched. Randomly saw a Chihuahua mix on Petfinder, loved the way he looked and decided to take a chance. I found out I was going to be his 4th owner(!) from his foster mom because he was too much to handle. He bit me when I first met him! Foster mom talked me into taking him for a trial period. Ended up asleep in my arms first night and inseparable ever since.

I went to the shelter and fell in love with my pup. Being in college, mom told me not to get him as he’s “too big”. So I lied, said I went to other rescues, didn’t meet any other dogs, and went back to get my boy. He’s my perfect dog. Even with his quirks and the few behavioral issues he has, I don’t think I could have found a dog more suited to me than he is.

I got an offer to work front counter at my local shelter. I've wanted to work somewhere that I can be proud of for awhile now so when I saw this opportunity I jumped on it. The other bit of news I got this morning was that the family dog is showing pain signs and that it's her time. The end has been approaching for awhile now, she's 16, but I think because of the suddenness it's really hitting me harder than I expected. This has got me worried about my ability to handle this job long term.

Many are hesitant to consider adopting shelter animals. They are frequently looked upon as 'damaged goods', when often, through no fault of their own, is where they end up. Shelters have to be among the most stressful places for any animal. They are missing their people, bunched in with strange animals, strange smells, etc. Unlike humans, who might encounter traumatic situations, it can be very challenging for an animal to reprocess or become desensitized to a traumatic memory. So it is very important to seek out 'qualified' professionals behaviorists / trainers - to assist the animal in dealing with their fear. It takes a person willing to invest in the time AND dedication. It is not for everyone. Remember, Rome was not built in a day. Also, I highly recommend checking out the marvelous work Brandon McMillan does to make a difference. His 'Lucky Dog Reunions' airs on CBS Saturday mornings. Don't forget to have some tissues nearby - because I can guarantee some good tears!
