I never heard Pete Best until the budget My Bonnie album in the 70s. He wasn't bad as the press made him out to be - but he always had the same feel and fill - not quite Beatlesque. Fast forward to this and he still has that feel and fill, but he's picked up quite a bit more. Glad he finally got royalties from the old days.

@@KC-wi4gh Absolutely. I think it was John who said "Our best stuff was never recorded" (referring to Hamburg). From everything I've heard, they sounded incredible in Hamburg. Stu singing Love Mr Tender got the largest ovation of the night, Pete singing Peppermint Twist was also a hit, and if his rendition of Boys is anything to go by (much better than Ringo's in my opinion), it would've been incredible. And judging by Pete's fills in this clip, he would've been an absolute machine. I love Ringo, but there's nothing wrong with Pete at all, despite what some might say. His experience with the band was more raw, genuine, and intimate, whereas after Ringo joined, everything became very commercial. I understand that without Ringo the Beatles wouldn't be who they are today, but I can't forgive any of them for the way they treated Pete (it's not Ringo's fault, so I'm not including him here)- that's the one grudge I have against them as individuals, otherwise they're, evidently, incredible people. Edit: Fixed typo

What’s weird Pete plays more aggressively than Ringo does now
@kedacchi12

Unfortunately, Ringo mostly focuses on keeping the rhythm in the All-Star Star Band; there are fewer fill-ins than in the past, and he doesn't play the wonderful unique drums.

Pete was always an aggressive drummer. Remember “The Atom Beat”? He can easily play these early numbers but that’s because he has never progressed in more than 60 years of playing. Pete could never have played on Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sht Pepper etc. That was Ringo’s strength. He could play the song he was presented with. Pete just played and still plays the same way as always.but for what he is playing, he is good!

I’m replying to my own post! Listen to Pete’s playing in “Standing there” against Ringo’s playing. Ringo’s is way more inventive, tight as hell and is right on the beat.

@@thegravelcamp-official5465 Bests playing has very little structure. That is where he and Starr differ. Your average club/pub drummer could wipe the floor with Best. He got very well paid for being well average!

The two biggest issues with Pete Best, and why he was fired, were 1. Poor time-keeping. This is a drummers bread and butter. Pete dragged and raced all over the place. It was fine enough for Hamburg strip clubs, but not for a world class band and definitely not for professional recording. 2. Unimaginative fills/general playing. Pete seemed to have about 3 or 4 fills and nothing beyond that. I think he is quite uninteresting as a drummer. Having said that, good on him for still playing gigs and getting out there.

Terrible time keeping, poorly placed pointless fills, no feel, no technique (improper and stiff grip for starters). No wonder he was fired and never hired by another band. Very poor drumming.

That's where you are wrong. After he was dismissed from The Beatles he was hired to play drums in Lee Curtis and the All- Stars . Subsequently his own group The Pete Best Band were signed to Decca who had turned down The Beatles. He stopped music in 1968. In 1988 he came out of retirement for a one off gig in Liverpool. It proved so successful The Pete Best Band reformed with new members. In 2008 their album Haymans Green was on a list for a Grammy nomination. Unfortunately they didn't make the final selection but still it was a massive achievement.
