Great video! I really appreciate how you break down seemingly difficult topics (structure of paper, mindset etc.) to a level that is very understandable. With that said, the challenge I am currently facing with writing my first journal is the following; I want to present a new framework for user involvement in the design process of certain type of building. I achieve this by using my studied case studies (summarized first with a table) on a current classification for user involvement and map/connect the cases according to the different levels of user involvement shown in the current classification. A result of this is to showcase that due to the data shown in the studied cases, we need a more comprehensive classification that incorporates the data shown in my cases, hence me presenting the need for this new way of classifying user involvement. What follows after the mapping of the cases is 2-3 sub-sections discussing the patterns shown in the data which is the followed up by a result chapter that consists of me presenting the new way of classifying user involvement. Finally, the discussion and conclusion revolves around this new classification that I have crafted. In plain english, I use a CURRENT way of describing/classifying user involvement for the observed cases I have to SHOW the need for a new, more accurate way of describing user involvement. With that chinese wall of a text out of the way, I try to understand how "structure" comes into play in my current writing... would highly appreciate a reply James! :) Thanks in advance!

Difficult to do this through KZitem comments, but I'll give it a shot... 1) There's a recognised need for user involvement in design... 2) To achieve this, there's an accepted method of classification 3) However... (I guess this hasn't been tested? or there's some problem or gap regarding how it's been tested) 4) This research tests the existing classification system... Each of these 4 steps sets up the next The way you show the need for a new system is through your analysis of the existing system

Thank you so much for these videos and your channel. I am starting my Master's degree in a month and I am thinking and debating with myself wether or not I should be doing a PhD as well. These videos definitely help put things in perspective and I will definitely follow your advice as I move along my degree. THANK YOU!

If you're thinking of doing a PhD- try to get to know some PhD students and research staff during your masters and be curious about their work. It should help you decide if you want to do a PhD and what kind of work you want to do. It will also help with your application and it will help you choose who to work with.

Please talk about chapter writing particularly from humanities perspective. I am doing research in international relations which is a case study about bilateral relations. This format can work for conceptual framework chapter but what about other chapters related to case study.

could you please show us how to write the introduction chapter of a dissertation and how to edit the first draft? thank you in advance

I cover the intro chapter in detail in my writing course- as for how to edit the first draft, it depends how you wrote it. Generally, I try to get a good first draft, then read it aloud. Much of the editing is then about cutting things that don't flow or don't work, or about minor tidying up. If the first draft was written in a stream of consciousness where you just get words down on the page, then it likely requires rewriting completely, but slowing down and doing it carefully.

Hello James. I have to admit that your oral presentation is useful for PhD students. It would be much more interesting if you could narrow down your ideas along with your talk in ppt. Many Thanks :)
