The big selling point for this 50e model is that in certain countries like Finland the taxes for higher co2 cars are huge. For example 50e has 2k€ tax but the M60 version has 66k tax. Just because of lower emissions.

That makes a lot of sense in those markets. Here because the car is so expensive there aren't any incentives on it versus the regular ICE version.

We'd love to if Porsche gave us access to their vehicles. Unfortunately we're still considered too small to get them ☹️

I rented a 2023 hybrid X5 in Maui in November and it was such a nice car. I don't know that I would ever buy an x5, but it was incredibly nice. My hesitation is its reliability.

New BMWs are actually reliable, especially this powertrain

The check engine light came on 3 separate times during our week with this X5, we first took it to BMW where they advised us that these new models have to be diagnosed via BMW's cloud, they no longer stick a OBDII scanner in to figure out the problem as our own scanner came back with N/A faults. The advisor we spoke with mentioned it could be due to the grille flaps not engaging properly. The third time the CEL came on was during our trip to drop this off, I stopped the car to use the washroom and the light was on when I started it back up. Personally I loved my two weeks with the X5, and the magical fuel economy I had with it. Under warranty I wouldn't worry about it. After that, I don't think I'd want to own it.

@@PRNTestDrive hmm that seems to be a common issue, I’ve seen a lot of frustrated 50e owners on the forums say the same thing. Apparently bmw of NA is also not being of much help. I hope they figure out these (unacceptable) teething issues with the 50e, but from what I’ve seen the 45e which is essentially the same powertrain has been very reliable.

@@MRMV483yep. The 50e looked great on paper, but I bought the 40i. Simple probability theory says the reliability of two separate systems is less than one, and the feedback I am seeing all over from frustrated 50i owners suggests this car is not for the faint of heart. So far, not a hitch with my 40i after 4-plus months.

@@scooter5940fair enough, X5 40i is a great choice. I’ve owned BMWs with B-code engines for almost 10 years now (2014 2series B38 and 2017 5series with B48) and they have been very reliable for 100k and 150k miles respectively. Last year I traded the 5series in for a 320e touring which also has been dead reliable for the last 30k miles. I do believe the BMW hybrid systems are some of the most reliable systems out there as they were quite early adopters / they have had a technology partnerships with Toyota. Ofcourse simplicity still means technically less things to go wrong. I hope they get their supplychain / 50e issues fixed asap as it is such an attractive proposition unlike the new abomination of a cost-cut 5series… Next year I will be buying a CPO G31 530i and drive it into the ground.

It is not about saving money but reducing carbon footprint without too much inconvenience. Meaning, avoiding the public charging network in a fully electric vehicle.
@PRNTestDrive

Avoiding public charging is fine for daily use, during the time I had this at home I never used a public charger. But on a road trip you want to save fuel when you can. I didn't find gas to be particularly cheap in the US with prices varying widely from area to area, sometimes even street to street.

This 2024 is complete Overpriced JUNK, just like the 2023 model. Horrible quality of Leather and materials used and completely useless in light snow situations or mud, Junk.

We didn't have the chance to test this out in the snow, we did have some wet slush come down later in our two weeks with this and the car performed great. We had Pirelli Scorpion Winter tires which we last tested on the BMW X3 M Competition and found them to be the best winter tires money can buy.
