EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE FILM OF THE YEAR!!! Seriously tho, this film lowkey opened my third eye. twitter.com/_arpanette_ #everythingeverywhereallonce #A24
As marvel fans, I thought Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness would be the film of the year, but after watching it... then I agree Everything Everywhere all at once deserves that title more

Such a rich movie. Here’s my take away after my 3rd watch lol. BIG SPOILERS AHEAD. I saw the main storyline as a mother (Evelyn) trying to save her daughter (Joy) from existential apathy/despair which is personified as Jobu Tubacky. The Alpha-verse believed the way to “defeat” this existential dread is to fight it, with violence. Joy’s solution was to destroy herself via the bagel aka suicide. Waymond’s method of “fighting” was with kindness. Evelyn tried to become/understand her daughter and along her journey she attempted each approach with Jobu (violence, succumbing to “the bagel”, and kindness) to no avail. The resolution was born out of the conversation as rocks ,where Jobu mentions that human history is just “a series of new discoveries, that show how stupid and small we are”. Evelyn saves her daughter by acknowledging that we are small/stupid and maybe the next discovery will explain why Jobu went looking for her. And why out of all the possible places she could be, that she still wants to be right here with her daughter. The reason/discovery being love. ❤️🔥

Very interesting take. Although for me, I think that the Alphaverse’s way is not violence in general, but to completely take control of the problem. What I took from the Alphaverse is that they think they’re all superior, that they are blind themselves in winning a highly unwinnable fight against Jobu (This could mirror how Evelyn blind herself in not seeing how far she had come as a person, trying to please her father). I could also argue Evelyn did gain something from trying each approach, she learnt to appreciate herself and not passing the expectations from her father, acknowledging we’re indeed small and will continue to be littler but also acknowledging we have people who we care and cares for us, and that being kind and understanding can make a difference, no matter if at the end of the day everything of it doesn’t matter, as long she is with everyone through the good and bad.

Interesting - I saw this as the most failed Evelyn was the one that yearned to do something great the most among all the Evelyn's, which made her the one to be most able to become "the one" to fight Jobu - to right the mistake of Alpha Evelyn which was the cause of Jobu in the first place while Jobu the one who was made to see everything (and thus made to no longer care about anything) just wanted to make "the one" Evelyn feel the bottomless despair she felt but because that Evelyn happened to come from the most failed Evelyn, she was able to show Jobu something I assume Alpha Evelyn didn't show her which is is an accepting motherly love, as well the option to still make choices (learned from failed Waymond, who chose to always fight with love) even if they can see everything all at once.... well anyways it's a testament to this movie when there's literally so much to get out of it lol

I think you’re off, but only slightly. I think the existential apathy and despair is Evelyn’s, and that she projects those feelings onto her *idea* of Joy. And I believe the - let’s say “femininity” - of the bagel and other subtlety female representations of “evil” and “despair” around Jobu are representative of Evelyn’s subconscious, internalized homophobia. IMO, the movie does an amazing job of showing how complex and relentless the experience of mental illness can be, but I ultimately read it as a tragedy. Evelyn’s emotions, experience, and character arc are all very real - especially to her - but the only part of the happy-ending that happens in objective reality is where Evelyn is honest with her Dad, Joy’s grandfather, about the nature of Joys relationship with her girlfriend. Otherwise it’s all psychosis, marital issues, possibly still divorce, and definitely back-taxes. :( Sorry my take is so Debbie Downer :P

In this chaotic world of yours, you must find your happiness✨Only you can determine a true meaning of your life, even the world seems to view you as a failure, it is only you have the right to ponder if you really live a meaningless life..Those moments you take for granted will lead you to question yourself, the all "what if's" of your life..This movie represents most of the people who is struggling in their innermost self..I hope that we can cope in this chaotic world of ours✨

I agree with you 💯 on all the points you discussed. The philosophy of “Everything, everywhere, all at once” have stuck with me. It has hit me harder than I anticipated. I resonate with the “becoming more” and “nothing matters” as I have had both thoughts and experiences in separate occasions. This movie illustrated the points perfectly and has made me revisit my own way of thinking. Moreover, due to the movie’s ridiculousness in its entirety combined with the philosophy, I won’t be forgetting this movie anytime soon. Would be attending the theater once more to see it and 💯 will be purchasing the blu- ray of this movie once it has been released. Can’t wait! I loved every minute of it!

My point of view is that "nothing matters" may lead a being to do anything and not care at all with all the events in multidimensions which turns everything into a chaos or cycle that death will be better. On a reverse side, he, being all knowing and everything, just want to experience it all and appreciate what he can do, making love as his driving force. Not saying other is good or bad, it's just the polarity of everything.

I was expecting it to be good, but it still managed to surprise me on how good it can be. It bother me for a while since it seems like not much people around share the same feeling, but I am happy that out there in the world there are many people who like this film. I believe the existentialist crisis will always come to us at some point of our life, and I hope by watching this movie, it can bring people out of self denial and nihilism. Great review btw! Didn’t think of the “nothing matters” thing in the way you did, definitely some new insights to me

I don't think I've ever seen a movie hit my world view so well. I'm atheist, and as part of that, I've often said that there is no greater plan or meaning in the world. Nothing matters. I don't see that as sad or depressing or nihilistic. I see it as ultimately liberating. We must make the meaning in our lives. There's a great quote from, of all places, the Marvel Comics character Beta Ray Bill. After saying he didn't believe in gods, and that he thought the idea of worshiping some unknown was "obscene," he tells his friends; "If there is nothing but what we make in this world, brothers...let us make good."

If everyone is more than they think then everyone is standard, par for the course and no one is special. Aside from loving the movie, as entertainment, and hoping it wins an Oscar, I don't believe there is any underlying message. In reality we are actually less than we think, our arrogance as a species causes so much damage to the world and the people around us. Saying we can all be great is ridiculous and harmful, most will never be rich, be beautiful, be successful, be happy, be truly loved or truly love, acceptance of who we are, as humble as that may be, is the only way to be content. Everything else is snake oil.
