Thermistor and Its Types
A thermistor is a type of resistor whose resistance varies significantly with temperature. There are two main types of thermistors: Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) and Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC).
NTC Thermistors: These thermistors reduce their resistance as the temperature increases. They are widely used as inrush-current limiters and temperature sensors .
PTC Thermistors: In contrast, PTC thermistors increase their resistance as the temperature increases. They are used as self-resetting overcurrent protectors and self-regulating heating elements .
Construction and Function
Thermistors are constructed using semiconductor metal oxides and are available with either a negative temperature coefficient (NTC) of resistance or a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of resistance. The difference lies in how they respond to changes in temperature: NTC thermistors reduce their resistance as the temperature increases, while PTC thermistors increase their resistance as the temperature increases .
Applications
NTC Thermistors: These are commonly used for temperature measurement and as inrush-current limiters.
PTC Thermistors: They are primarily used for circuit protection, acting as self-resetting overcurrent protectors and self-regulating heating elements.
