This was a worldwide hit in 1970, reaching number 7 in the UK chart, and number 9 in the US.
I only discovered recently that this was co-written by Albert Hammond, the song writing legend that has written successful songs for dozens of singers and bands, particularly from the 1970s through to the 1990s. He also recorded in his own right, most notably ‘It Never Rains In Southern California’ and (a favourite of mine) ‘The Free Electric Band’. He was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2000.
The song’s lyrics apparently relate to a conversation between a piano and a metronome. The metronome has had its bell stolen and is therefore of little use to the piano, hence it wants its ‘ding’ back (this is part of a larger story!)
