Hello guys, we are pleased to announce that we shall over the next few months finish covering the Plantagenet dynasty and will release a series of compilations covering the various Monarchs in order of their reigns. We hope you enjoy part one, covering the lives of Henry II, Richard I, King John and Henry III. Part Two will be released next month!

Muslims are depicted as good reasonable people, who allowed other religions to be practiced, making no mention of having to pay those muslims for the privilege, and yeah the west was fighting a war because the muslims were so reasonable and minding their own business. while the English are depicted as "same as nazi's". leftist codswallop.

@@horseracingsucks That's exactly right - in those days, back in the 1960s, we had to learn dates and stuff out of books, read a chapter or paragraphs for homework etc. It wasn't until I left school and started reading for myself that it got more interesting. And I have to say, for me, it probably started with the books of Jean Plaidy. I read all her books, loved them and it just made me want to learn more. And of course I loved the BBC TV series Elizabeth R with Glenda Jackson and The Six Wives of Henry VIII with Keith Michel, all from the 1970s, that certainly helped a lot. Replace the earthly ideologies of progressives vs conservatives with the heavenly ideologies of religion, and you have roughly the same stuff. Monarchies and republics existed back then and they still persist today, people back whatever political figure they want, in the past by fighting for them in military campaigns, in today by promoting them in electoral campaigns. Yes - Elizabeth II is a direct descendant of Elizabeth I through her fathers line. Elizabeth I was descended from the House of York through her grandmother. The House of York is one of the Plantagenet cadet houses. So this is how the Plantagenets and Windsors are related.
@GoGreen1977
Жыл бұрын
@@donna25871 No, Elizabeth II was NOT a direct descendent of Elizabeth I since Elizabeth Tudor had no children. Elizabeth II was a descendent of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York through both of their daughters, Margaret and Mary. Through Margaret, the Stuarts eventually gained the thrown of England and Elizabeth II was descended from them. Mary Tudor (the "French Queen"/Duchess of Suffolk) was an ancestor of the mother of Elizabeth II (the late Queen Mother.) Btw, Henry VII was also descended from the Plantagenets since he was descended from John of Gaunt, a son of Edward III. That is how he had a claim to the English throne.

I would posit that a certain proportion of comments displaying poor English spelling and grammar are actually written by people who speak English as a second language. Additionally, I second the comment by the person quoting Socrates. Being well-spoken (well-written?) does not automatically make you intelligent, and being intelligent doesn't automatically make you wise. I have known a great many people who know a lot and speak perfect English, yet show a disturbing lack of genuine understanding, and an inability to actually apply their knowledge outside of the realm in which they learnt it - or worse, a complete misunderstanding and misapplication of their knowledge.

They were only forgiven by the Pope when presented with the ill-gotten bounty from the greatest Christian city of its time. The city never recovered from its sack and rule by the Catholics, and fell in 1453 to Mehmet the Conqueror. @@gugugugu1300 I have no idea what you are talking about. Even at the time of the Magna Carta, King John could speak English and all the nobility could speak English. One of the reasons that Richard I's Lord Chancellor got arrested is because he couldn't speak English and Bishop Hugh of Coventry wrote a letter supported by Prince John telling him that only men of the realm should hold power in England. When the English lords rebelled during the Magna Carta, all of the Lords met at the Jewelled shrine of St Edmund the Martyr, an Anglo-Saxon King that was idealised as a perfect role model for governance. As for the English lords only visiting England twice in their lives. That's an out right French lie. Richard FitzNeal in the Dialogs of the Exchequer 1171 said that "After English and Norman has lived side by side for so long, it's become impossible to tell them apart". After King John lost at Bouvines, all these "French lords of England as you French put it" completely turned their backs on their French territory, abandoned any homage to the French king and came back home to fight for their homeland. Whether you French like to accept it or not, after 1066 many "French lords" came to England, married English wives, raised English children and became Anglicised so much that even when Stephen Langton went on the run to France to escape our civil war, all the French intellectuals from Laon, Paris and Orleans came to meet these Englishman and they noted the French that the English lords spoke was so strange that they could barely understand them and were surprised that Langton and his friends preferred to drink Cider at the dinner table over any French wine.

My 25th great grandfather knew King John I of England personally. My 25th great grandfather not only knew King John I personally, he also had floor length hair. My 25th great grandfather was absolutely devastated when King John I died at age 49 in late 1216. My 25th great grandfather mourned the death of King John I of England for decades. May they rest together in peace. 💐🌷🌹🌺🌸🌼

Why is it you include King John in your list of people you hope are burning in hell yet here you say you wish he is resting in peace you can't have it both ways?

Excellent video, thanks for posting. But a few breaks between sentences or paragraphs in the almost breathless dialogue accompanying the pictures would have made it even better and much more listenable.

King John gets a bad wrap in my opinion. He had many successes in the face of terrible circumstances and extremely powerful, clever enemies. Phillip II was arguably one of the best French, if not overall European kings, he was an inexorable force that even challenged and outwitted John's father. Much of what John had to deal with had been sown by the neglect of Richard as he spent all of his time crusading. Richard and Elanor also spent years defaming him and publicly mocking him. Despite all of this he eventually came into his own and won many many significant battles, and most of his loss of land was due to too many fronts opening up rather than massive military blunders. I always have a soft spot for misunderstood or historically disliked leaders, and its crazy how often a little investigation reveals the complexity of the situation, and John was a great example of that. We like the mythologize the great leaders as cunning, brave, etc, but a massive component is always luck and timing that allowed them to flex those attributes, and even they would probably admit this were they alive to be asked. Sometimes we should give a second look to those who just survived, or adapted in the unluckiest, worst times.

I say your soft spot for John causes you to lack objectivity. Do a deep dive on why at the Battle of Bovines, a key contingent of his vassals left before the battle started. John and his German nephew Otto IV then lost. John had serious flaws.

My family can trace our lineage back to a knight in William the Conqueror's army at the Battle of Hastings. He was created an earl after the William took the English throne. The family kept the earldom until the reign of King John and the First Baron's War, and Magna Carta was signed.

Of course being descended from Henry III means I'm descended from King John, Henry III's father. So I guess that's not a big deal, since over 100 million other Americans are estimated to be descended from King John of England. My it's a small, small world!

It's very interesting and reasonably accurate enough for our purposes, though it would be nice to know who wrote it and what the sources are. Every historian puts his or her name to it, because history is influenced by interpretation just like any other story. Is the narration in some way computer-generated? It just seems to drone on a bit too quickly at times without any pauses or inflection, which is a bit distracting at times. History is, at base, a story, and needs to be told that way.

Looking at henry II what comes immedeately into my mind is That the very strenghts you may have the same could lead to your defeat if you could not control them. The greater these strenghts are the bigger could be your fall. Henry Ii was for sure one of the greatest english Kings but his strenghts inherited his Great downfall leading to his death much too early. The Same was inhärent to his surviving 2 sons. Unfortunate but exactly this is what makes history so interestimg, especially the english one. This i allow me to say as an Austrian. Exzellent documentary guys !
