My dad was born in 1908. I am 52 the youngest in the family, born in Ontario, Canada. My dad passed away at 96. When I was growing up we listened to Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers.

Surely this is the most beautiful song in the world. And thank you, Collings, for the explanation of the story.

While I couldn't sing the words, I hummed my children to sleep, and now my grandchildren, with this tune. I often hum it to myself when I feel sentimental. It instills in me a longing for Ireland, tho I've never been.

This album is full of highlights; here, the most piercing of heartache. Before the Internet was in everyone's home, I remember asking Tommy about this. He explained the story, so readily available now. "For Ireland, I'd not tell her name." A young man sees the most beautiful girl one morning by his farm. She's the one who'll pierce his heart. They're of different status. He can never have her. Her identity is a secret he'll keep forever and tell no man, even if "Ireland" herself were to ask. Simply Amazing. A culture, poetry, & Theatre, all presented perfectly.

it also has an inaccuracy in it, in "Sound The Pibroch" Liam said the Battle of Culloden took place on Wednesday, but after doing some research, I discovered it *ACTUALLY* took place on a *SATURDAY*

40 years ago I went to a Makem & Clancy concert in Lahinch in Co. Clare as barely a teenager. That was the first time I heard The Planters Daughter and it stayed with me in the back of my mind till now, proving that every day is a school day no matter what age you are. Tonight I discovered it is a poem by Austin Clarke. We live and we learn. Beautiful!

Easily the nicest track on this album. When Tommy Makem passed on in 2007 I played this on radio in tribute

'....Is Ar Éirinn Ní Neosfainn Cé Hí translates as ‘For Ireland I’d Not Tell Her Name’. A traditional song, believed to have been written in 1810 by a native of Kerry, it was first published by E. Walsh in 1847. Tradition attributes it to a young man’s secret love for his brother's bride: Too poor to support her and too shy to propose, he had gone abroad to seek his fortune. But when he returned to claim his beloved, he found her married to his brother. He wrote this song for her but, for obvious reasons, refused to reveal her name....'.

The story just gets worse... In my father's gaelic he goes off to make his fortune only to return to find his true love has married his brother... so he is condemned to wander Ireland in sadness...
