You know what's almost terrifying? These "modern" generations don't even know that a lot of these songs, the performers and the writers, ever existed! So-called "modern" persons think they're the ones who discovered or invented the stuff. Then those that actually recall this stuff are dismissed and overlooked by society...smh.... Like auto-tune. I'm old enough to remember when singers had real voices. I'm old enough to remember when real vocal gifts and real singing were the "gold standard", not that just anybody could sing and it would be passed through Auto-Tune and boom now they sound accomplished and talented....smh.... The deal is, I'm old enough now that myself and my generation will disappear and we're the ones who recall real singing. The next generation only knows Auto-Tune singing..... I'm so sad for everyone in the future that is dismissive of the fabulousness that was! (DON'T get me started on "sampling" in music writing 🙄....) (I will restrain myself. This could definitely become a dissertation)

Finally one of the greatest performances on the Sullivan show makes it to the channel! Here's the story behind this legendary performance. Earlier in the show, the Platters sang the theme song to "The Sound and the Fury" (another great performance), and Ed said they would be back later in the show. "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" occurred right at the end of the episode. In the last five minutes of airtime, Ed came on and said they were out of time. The Platters, who were waiting on stage, wouldn't be able to sing again and he apologized for it. He had someone else on who took up extra time and Ed told the audience it was necessary to eliminate the second number of the Platters. The Platters were just about to leave when you hear a voice from offstage tell Ed "You have time for the second number". Ed looks over and says excitedly, "We have, really?! Fine, wonderful! We have time! C'mon, the Platters!" after which he motions for the Platters to hurry and we ended up with this incredible performance of the number one hit, "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes". "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" was written by Jerome Kern and Otto Harbach in 1933. Originally, when Kern's estate found that a "rock and roll group" was going to do a remake of Kern's legendary ballad, they tried to get it stopped, believing it was going to be a redone in a teen rock style assumedly. After the record came out and they heard this beautiful rendition, they apparently changed their minds. In my opinion, no one has sung "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" better than lead singer Tony Williams and the Platters. I have wondered for decades why the Platters were never included in any "Best of Sullivan" packaged show, and I'm so glad to see this is being rectified on this channel. Thank you Ed Sullivan channel! I hope you will continue to post their songs. P. S. to the uploaders: As you are going through their appearances, please note that there is a lost performance of the Platters singing "My Prayer" on August 12, 1956. It is mislabeled in the Historic Films archives as "Duwop" with no group name but with the song title "My Prayer" listed. According to newspaper listings of the time, The Platters appeared singing their number one hit. I've never seen this, and I hope it will be posted here, along with all the other performances which haven't been seen in many years.

In a dispute over money, Williams left the Platters in 1959 to pursue a solo career, and continued to work with Ram as his manager.] He recorded an LP, A Girl Is A Girl Is A Girl, but his career faltered after he was arrested on a morals charge, of which he was later cleared. He continued to perform with the Platters intermittently until 1960, but then won a legal action against Ram which allowed him to formally leave the group. He signed as a solo singer for Reprise Records in 1961, recording Tony Williams Sings His Greatest Hits, including re-recordings of some of the Platters' songs, but returned to Philips Records the following year. He released the album The Magic Touch Of Tony in 1962, and the same year overdubbed vocals for a Platters record, Encore Of Broadway Golden Hits. However, by this time music buyers' tastes had changed, and Williams' voice had lost some of its appeal.
