I cry every time I watch you cry. This songs hits me deep as I am a poet and song writer. I also have a pendilume. Another strange about this is I also play keyboard .the most haunting thing about this song that sears straight into my heart is I lost my dear friend to suucide. He left me the msg telling me goodbye. I didnt handle it well an ovèrdosed and was unconcious for 2 days. When I recovered I focused more on music and to this day I rely on the energies I draw from music to trancend me to where I need to be in my life right now. This song hits me to its very meaning. I do understand the delimia their band mustve felt. So torn. So driven by a force that cannot be rekkoned . Floor Jensen brings the rawest of feelings out of me and delivers with such commanding elegance and grace. She is my favorite singer in the world. Im a 43 year old woman who recently jumped on the Night train. I dont plan on getting off of this well guided mighty train. I am truely grateful to have found this band. May I ask you to check out Floor Jensen singing O Mio Babbino Caro on youtube. You will be amazed. Perfection.

So many people originally think it's from the singer, but it's not, she just does a beautiful job telling Tuomas's story...

@@daliden I cry every time. quite a few of their songs move me no matter how many times ive heard it. This one is the easiest to make me cry for many obvious reasons but I wont because It'd be a novel to read by the end of things. and GSoE... the song's structure is brilliance, the lyrical build up is brilliance, the whale calls, the monkey sounds, the siren sounds, everything in that song (I almost typed Film instead of Song if that says anything) paints such a beautiful and amazing story, capping it off with all of us (humanity) In the grand scheme of things, that really adds another depth to imagine that while you listen to the song, and sing along "we were here" that in the wide world there are probably thousands of other people sitting there with you, whom you have never met, in some other parts of the globe singing it in that same moment too. and I think that makes the song even more amazing. the live video gets me too because of how lovely they are at the end, they are so very humble and love their fans so much, and the fireworks nd the epic ending with the verse. just. for what it's worth, this song brings me to tears almost every single time i listen to it. the fact that it's tuomas's metaphoric suicide makes the emotional punch that much harder, and floor brings so much more emotion to it just with her presence and vocals. it's an absolutely incredible song. almost everyone i've seen react to this song has had the same reaction as you--it makes you feel so many emotions at once and yanks you back and forth between them in such a masterful way that it's hard not to acknowledge the artistry of every element the song has. be prepared for more emotions with Greatest Show, but it won't be the same kind of emotion you get from this one. it's honestly impossible to describe how the song makes me feel, personally, but it's definitely Some Type Of Way, so brace yourself!

Dude, there is no need to apologize for tearing up, especially if you knew the story of the song before hearing it. I was kind of late to the Nightwish party, found them after a friend recommended Within Temptation to me and I checked out similar bands, that was in 2008. I didn't know about the drama with the change in singers, and had no "loyalty" to a singer, so I enjoyed Anette just as much as Tarja (admittedly, now I like Floor more than both). Dark Passion Play was still relatively new, so I got it and listened to it, enjoyed it, thought this was a cool song. It wasn't until recently that I actually learned the story behind it. Now I can't help but get a little misty eyed watching this video, because aside from Floor absolutely killing it, the lyrics actually have a new meaning for me, and seeing Tuomas do the motion like the pendulum slicing his neck, him singing at the end, and the way Marco and Emppu come to stand by their friend in a show of support... it's just a lot to take in. You really feel it. The Greatest Show on Earth shouldn't hit you that hard. For me, it has its own kind of special feeling, but only because I'm a big nerd so I catch all the scientific references thrown in there and it makes me giddy. But otherwise, it's just a rocking song. Maybe towards the end, depending on how much you think about what they're singing... but you'll probably be fine. If you want stuff that won't make you tear up, check out Romanticide (the Floor version), or even Yours Is An Empty Home (bonus of getting to see/hear Floor growl). And if you want more Marco, check out Master Passion Greed (not sure if there's a live version), or The Islander (one of my favorite songs from them)... though The Islander might tug at you at a little.

Thank you for taking me along for a ride on that emotional rollercoaster. This song has it all, really. Especially the end resonates on a deep level. You'd have to be made out of wood not to feel that raw emotion in there. There's despair, redemption, death and grace, all together.

That's actually Marco singing in his natural voice, Tuomas is singing along un miced. I actually didn't know until I watched The Islander live. Marco and the other guitarist ( his name is Emppu I think, ) went to stand by him for support because it was and probably still is, difficult for him to perform this. But do you see why I wanna make symphonic metal music so badly? I don't know that I'll ever be able to come up with anything this majestic, but I can try; and I promise I will try to be a bit more light hearted. Don't worry about crying. takes a real man to show his emotions.

Dammit, you made me misty eyed at the end. OK a lot to say so walls of text incoming :) This is probably their most emotional song, especially sad-emotional. The pain is palpable in this song. Greatest Show on Earth will have likely as powerful an impact, but not in a sad-emotional way. More just an awe-inspiring thing, if you're a lover of science and nature, GSOE is just magnificent. Other songs evoke power, aggression, joy, love. The list is endless. Throughout that song you'll notice Marco and Emppu both taking time to go talk to Tuomas and make sure he is ok. You see other brilliant interplays, after Emppu wanders over to Tuomas you see Marco walk over to where Emppu normally plays, you then see him unmute Emppu's guitar just before Emppu comes back in playing. I don't know why but I love seeing that happen, just something about the synergy of the band shows itself there. You said about being a fair-weather fan before and I guess that's what I was I enjoyed the music, but it wasn't an obsession. Now, well now, I listen daily and actively seek out others watching them for the first time. I'm hooked on Nightwish with Floor's voice for life. The songs can evoke the aforementioned emotions on a daily basis, again and again. That's not an easy thing to do, some bands may achieve that with a song or two, but for Nighwish to do this with album after album, song after song, they're my soulband. Something a little different for you. Put While Your Lips Are Still Red (LIVE of course) on the list. Shorter song, you're not going to be getting emotional. But it's predominantly Marco singing, with Floor and Troy backing him up and it's just a lovely ballad, beautifully performed. Keep up the reactions my dude!

You aren't the first and won't be the last to cry while hearing this song. It still gets me and I've heard it 100 times at least. TGSOE is very similar in how it has many changes and parts. The ending is somewhat emotional and powerful too. lol Every Nightwish song pulls at your heart strings in one way or another. That's why I love them so much. Floor's voice puts an exclamation point on the performances. Storytime probably won't make you cry. Unless you watch the Tampere 2015 one and cry because you don't get a peek at Floor's panties when she steps over the fan at the end. ;) Yes, she does a Marilyn Monroe impression and if you pay attention, you can tell she does it on purpose! It's pretty funny! And that grin on her face as she turns away from the crowd is the best part. You have to look through her hair to catch it, but it's there and it lets you know she knows what she did and she thought it was hilarious.

Ou jeah, this is emotionaly heavy song. Some trivia about it: Tuomas wrote it after Tarja left. They kicked her wery ugly way and he was the one blamed for it. So those harsh emotios are him being betrayed by Tarja before they kicked her out, him betraying Tarja by kicking her out, feelings lost and alone and hated by backfire of their fans, and his finding his sanctuary in his family, his parrents who loved him over all those things he was blamed and was blaming himself... I'm not sure if you are ready for Gretest Show on Earth already. My suggestion is to do some less emotional songs before. Somerhing hard and heavy perhaps. Romanticide from Wacken 2013, Yours is an Empty Hope from Nightwish Cruise on Baltic Princes, Weak Fantasy From Tampare or Wembley, Last Ride of the Day from Wacken again, 7 Days to the Wolves from Wembley, Sahara from Tampa, or something lighter like The Islander from Tampare. Or basicly anything elese after Floor joined them. Basicly anything from Wacken 2013 is absolutely top, and 99% of Wembley and Tampare (2015,2016) is top too. And some other ones. Or you may do some Floor outside of Nightwish. After Forever, ReVamp, Northward, Ayreon, Star One (that is basicly Ayreon too), Avalon (2nd album)....

What a great reaction! Getting so emotionally involved can only be achieved by doing your homework. Because if you don't know anything about the band's history and the effect all events had on Tuomas Holopainen the deeper meaning of this song will be totally lost to you. I cheer you for your insight and for allowing yourself to share your volnurability with us.

Cornelius Antonius to both replies: I am a little confused how this turned out. First, I only asked a question because I didn’t get your comment. From what I got you sought to play it down as some little project that doesn’t really cut it (on that I would fight you, if I had the time but as you made it clear, there’s no need to and I would rather spend my time rewatching it again) Second, where did you get my sensitivity-level from?

@@corneliusantonius3108 "I am an Athïest Of course I like it" I'm a Christian, but I'm also a big science nerd, so The Greatest Show on Earth became my absolute favorite song of all time, because it's a kicking song and makes scientific references. "Nightwish is my main Atheist band on the planet bro, do you want to fight me on that ?" I don't know that I'd class them as an "atheist" band. They dance a bit all over the spiritual/religious spectrum. Evolution isn't just an "atheist" thing, and on that, I *would* fight someone. The inclusion of Dawkins doesn't mean they're endorsing atheism above everything else, it just means he wrote a book related to the theme of the album. It's like claiming they're a Christian band just because their first single involved a Christian theme (at least in the sense it was related to the story of Christ and people around him, albeit without directly naming them). In interviews and otherwise, it doesn't sound like they endorse atheism any more than they endorse any other religious view, more keen on the idea of letting people decide for themselves based on their own personal thoughts and experiences. (Marco was directly asked about it, and basically says he doesn't know if there's a god or not, and if there is, it'd be practically impossible for us to know. Which is a fair view.) Heck, I like the bits spoken by Dawkins at the beginning and end of the song. The only reason I dislike Dawkins isn't because he's atheist, but because he's kind of an ass about women (or anyone who disagrees with how he does anything). Doesn't mean I can't agree on some things, of course.

You don't have to feel ashamed for crying, I'm 56 now and I got dehydrated the same way more than once. The keyboard guy is Tuomas Holopainen the composer of the band, and this composition is about his grief about Tarja having to leave the band. I'm sure Ann Waychoff will fill in the gaps very soon. Hail Ann, get well soon. We all miss you.

I can only imagine what he was going through when he wrote this, because they were all friends and not only was he having to tell an 'employee' that they are terminated but also that this friendship will be terminated too. And then having to make the decision do we keep going on? Do we stop the band now? hence the 'try to save them all' line, do what is best for the band. Now...through all that pain, depression...and probably even suicidal thoughts...think how elated and giddy he is now, that he has found a 'family' member that can convey his messages and masterpieces dutifully...every time he takes the stage he must be sooooo smiling on the inside...AMAZING reaction...thank you for sharing....A.

Tuomas used to let shut the vocals off his headset while performing this song because it is too emotional for him when he hears the lyrics. Nowadays they don't play it live anymore. I understand this of course but am still sad i will not get to see this song live.

Great reaction man. This video gets me every time too. Thanks for having the balls to post it, tears and all. It was great to go on the journey with you. This song is full of so much emotion relating to what Tuomas went through hating himself over having to remove Tarja from the band, feeling like he betrayed one of his dearest friends (even if they'd grown apart over the years). And then all the shit that was heaped upon him as the repercussions of that action. I've been a fan of this band since their first stateside release and I still remember the day I read the open letter to Tarja that they gave her after the End of an Era concert series. I was sad, yes. I was even worried that it might be the end of Nightwish. But not once did I think or wish any ill will towards Tuomas or any of the members of the band over it. They had been fighting tooth and nail for years to make music and art in what had become a toxic relationship and it says a LOT for their love of the band that they held it together for as long as they did. I can't even begin to imagine how he felt when he started getting hate mail from people who claimed to be fans and to love the music they'd made. Every time I think about it I just want to fucking hug the man. True fans don't do that shit. And to think that it nearly drove him to suicide breaks my heart, and I feel that every time I hear this song.

Wow, man, don't feel ashamed. That's pretty much how everyone here feels during the song (or should I say performance). There is a video on KZitem of the same show, but with lyrics. If you really want to get dehydrated, watch that one. If you didn't know, the song is divided into 5 parts. The last part is called Mother and Father, and it's about what Tuomas's mother said to him during his ordeal. Keep up the good work, we're loving it.

Raw emotion my friend! Many of us Nightwish devotees have been in your place, many times. Nightwish has no compare in so many levels and one often overlooked is the lyrics, the storytelling, pulling our raw emotions to daylight! Tuomas is an absolute genius! Nightwish/Floor make grown men cry, crying is part of Floorgasms and that is OK!
