I saw the Pogues many times in the winter of 1984/85 at venues like the Mean Fiddler and the Bull & Gate. It was the greatest privilege of my life.

These guys changed the game back then. It was suddenly cool to be Irish in London and people stopped taking the piss out of me for playing the banjo.

This was from a UK TV program called The Tube, broadcast live on Friday between 5pm and 7pm. I seem to remember this as early '85 but it's along time ago so could well be late '84. Only the first four songs were broadcast - the last two Greenland Whale Fisheries and Transmetroplitan were as far as I know never broadcast. Anyway, that's the reason the crowd were pretty static - You'd see the same people in there every week on TV! Including the dancers!

nollaigo kelly Phil should always be remembered for his great, gold song; “Thousands Are Sailing”! IMHO one of the most important songs of all. He sang it live on the “Last Concert” w/ Shane w/ The Pogues in Japan. I was glad to see him perform it himself. Absolutely an awesome song which tears at your heart strings. People will be singing it forever.

@@dennisyork9366 yes indeed Phil was a really lovely fellow, he also worked in rock on records in those days, Im sure he wasn’t part of the band in 84 but he was working with Shane also in the same shop. I still have my copy of thousands are sailing.

This looks taped for TV so the audience would have been show regulars rather than diehard Poguers. I can tell you when I saw them in the 80s we went crazy thrash-jigging in DMs. Once someone came down hard on my ankle and I had to be carried out by my mates. I was well annoyed to miss the rest of the gig!
