Man Pokémon Cards are just awesome. If you ever collected Pokémon cards as a child then you will get why some people are willing pay a lot of money for them. I have a collection I started building since last year and it’s just so awesome to be able to just sit on your free time and enjoy looking at something that was part of your childhood. Vintage cards have a distinct look to them versus the new modern cards. If you haven’t started collecting and you use to collect I recommend buying a few cards and then maybe it will remind of all the fun times you had with Pokémon! Awesome video by the way!

To clarify: People do not purchase Giffen goods "just to look rich". That is Veblen goods, which simply has a definition slightly more inclusive than the Ostentatious goods you mention and is therefore very similar. Giffen goods are such that when their prices increase within a limited amount, people consume more of them because they substitute other more expensive goods with them that they can no longer afford. Your written definition of a Giffen good is correct.

Actually, the value of NEW cards is HUGELY affected by how good they are in battle. Even relatively common cards can fetch up to $15 each if they become "staple" cards that almost every competitive player needs several copies of, sending short-term demand through the roof. High-tier rare cards routinely fetch $50-$100 due to demand from competitive players. But due to power creep, rebalancing (i.e. the introduction of counters to high-tier cards), and the fact that only cards generally less than 3 years old can be used in most tournaments, collector demand becomes the dominant driver of price as cards age.

With the ability Set Up being so good in the TCG the price of that one card usually made up 60% or more of the deck price players were using.

1st Edition Base Set Charizards are properly rare. The 1st Edition Base set was one of the smallest print runs in the TCG's history. Now that I know you're willing to do a video on such things, any chance you might be interested in doing a video on the similar but more restricted collector market of concert poster collecting? Many bands such as Pearl Jam, Tool and Guns n' Roses release limited edition, numbered concert posters and there is always speculation regarding it being a potential bubble or investment vehicle. The prices skyrocket just like collector cards like Pokemon/Magic/baseball/basketball cards, but I feel like the fact that they're always extremely low-volume and that there's a finite amount of them in existence, it might warrant a deep-dive of its own. Would love to hear an economic breakdown!

I was in the scene of buying/trading/selling cards from 2015 - 2017 on Reddit. In that time I saw that about half of my clientele were Collectors and the other TCG Tournament participants. The players paid a lot to get the best cards to win and it wasn't just the just the cards with Pokemon featured on them. Participants would put out for the best trainers and energy cards, especially if they were holo or some special promo release. It was pretty crazy. Regarding the market and prices, I saw tons of fluctuation. For example, there was a Shaymin EX from the expansion set Roaring Skies. That was worth around $75+ USD. I think the highest I saw it go was for around $120 USD. The second the expansion was out of rotation in the tournaments, it dropped to $5 - $15, depending on condition. With the collectors, I didn't see insane fluctuations in price that I saw with the tournament players. I could actually gauge value from older cards for future profit. I'd say the bubble has always been there and pops when expansions are out of rotation for tournaments.

Super late reply but as a collector who's been collecting and playing actively since 2009 (when I first actually had disposable income to both buy cards and drive myself to tournaments), I am quite frankly hoping this is a bubble that bursts because I wanna collect cards at bargain bin prices again. Prices jumped like crazy in 2016 when Go released, and have had an alarming surge across 2020, and it's annoying not being able to get new product at MSRP anymore for *any* of the new sets. I'd like to actually pull my staples from booster boxes and not having to buy them secondhand, thank you very much.

So many inaccuracies in this video. Even a PSA 1 of 1st edition Charizard is still going to go for over half a grand. Also you need to note that WOTC cards are all rising in value not just the Charizard. But again how do you define "worthless", considering a 1st edition energy card can fetch $100 at PSA 10.

The recent boom IS crazy and it’ll go down a little but there is a lot to Pokémon cards that determine value. They just stopped printing UnBroken Bonds last year and the value of the box is doubled. That is not even talking about their holiday specials of Hidden Fates and Champions Path that give you a chance to get Shiny Charizard. So many collectors, traders, players. As long as it stays popular Pokémon will retain its value. It would have to have a hard hit to lose all of that value and thats not factoring in nostalgia.

I think closest historical comparison would be comic books. Sure, they've tried making "limited editions" or "special covers" for more current comic books, but it's only certain historical comic books that didn't expect to survive that are worth real money. As long as it remains relevant in pop culture, it will likely be worth money.

My prediction is that the people who knew to get their cards graded in the past will come up the most (if they were to sell). Now imagine all the thousands of cards being sent into PSA/BG to be graded right now. They'll all come back within a few months and be listed on Ebay. The hype will be gone and prices will drop. Don't get me wrong though they'll still make a chunk of change but no where near of prices today. Then who knows maybe another Pokemon wave hits in another 10 years or so and that 200k Charizard is now 500k!

haha not a bad idea, just hide them away somewhere, or brainwave. Buy 2 packs, 1 in rubish condition and one that are all PSA 10's. The playability of a card does have a significant effect on its value over the short term. Shaymin-EX and Tapu Lele-GX were annoyingly expensive during their times in the standard rotation for how common they were supposed to be because literally every deck had to play them to be competitively viable. In the expanded format there are even really crazy cases of some common cards such as a Zorua from a certain expansion that shot its way up to $20 because it was dar and away the best Zorua to use while Zoroark-GX ruled the format. There are also some sets whose cards are almost guaranteedIf you want to invest in cards and have the time to grow a deep understanding of the card game, I think it is quite a solid investment for now. Sets like Shining Legends, Hidden Fates, and now Champion’s Path are especially likely to have their central cards only rise in value. Shiny Charizard GX has more than tripled in value just in the year since it’s been released.

It's interesting and cool seeing one of my favorite economics youtubers discuss this trend I've gotten very familiar with. Overall correct, but there are some significant clarifications: -a 1st edition charizard does "not" drop to near worthless under psa 7.5, not even close. They're all very valuable and worth at least a couple hundred if not thousands -modern sets are actually all risky of a reprint, which is why they have less certainty -it's not just the first 'set' it's all WOTC sets that can't be reprinted because of their deal with nintendo -are you sure pokemon is more popular than all other sports / magic for PSA grading? -would've been nice to mention pokemon as a franchise, brand, largest media company over star wars / etc. - I'm very surprised he didn't, which fails to mention one of the most important distinctions it has compared to a beanie baby. Unfortunately, that neglects a big hole in the argument

spend 200€ on an Evolutions Display made 300€ profit within 4 weeks (this display has the 1st Edition artworks) :D I would recommend investing in booster boxes rather than individual cards they are more likely to go up in price. My recommendations are Sun & Moon Burning shadows and the Darkness Ablaze display, those are rising constantly and can even be picked up from stores for less... well at least in Germany (Cards like charzard vmax can be pulled and this is in a psa 9 is worth the booster box -btw i pulled one :D)

Part of the allure of Charizard in its day actually *was* connected to its ability in the trading card game. Fire Spin was the most powerful attack in the early TCG, and it also had as much HP as Chansey (120, the highest in the game at the time as well). Blastoise and Venusaur had equal pull rates, however they were not as powerful. Therefore, Charizard was more valuable than the others. The desire to collect that particular card just happened to continue through later sets, even though other cards were more powerful.

Cool video EE, but I think you failed to mention a few key points when it comes to Pokemon as a speculative investment option. Historically, Pokemon TCG prices on the second-hand market have never once taken a dip, with year in year out growth and big spikes every five or so years. In addition to this, there is a massive difference between something like Beanie Babies and Pokemon - Pokemon is the single biggest media franchise of all time, and that comes with a certain market stability that other brands aren't afforded. Finally, with the 25th Anniversary of Pokemon next year in Japan, coinciding with the Olympics, there will be yet another spike in popularity and even more growth in the market. This is of course one man's opinion, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on these points. Love the videos mate.

Not sure if it plays into the bubble theory as well, but there are a ton of new cards from the last few years that have seen RIO's of 300% to almost 1000%, even from just late 2019 to late 2020 alone. Lots that are promo cards (Mario/Luigi Pikachu), but some rare normal pack ones that are just difficult to find. Lots today have appeal as Art pieces (literally some designed to look like art) then the ones of the past. There are also rare cards from the past that have been slept on for years that are starting to see some growth. I wouldnt say Pokemon is a bubble, but more like a sheet of bubble wrap. It has periods of huge interest, prices skyrocket on certain things, the bubble bursts, and things calm down a bit, but down the line there is another bubble on the sheet, and things repeat again, and again, and again.....

Not an economist, but I found many similarities between the points you explained in this video and my thoughts after looking at r/pokemontcg. The recent boom have made guys buying stuff like crazy, inundating the market with tons of supposedly expensive cards they send to grade in the hope they get a perfect score that makes their cards even more expensive. In my humble opinion, I see a bubble leaning to burst
