Cello is a the medium sized one that you hold in front of you, played seated. If they're standing, it's bigger, and it's held sort of on one side of you, it's a double bass. Also, with cello there's almost _always_ a bow.

For the record, what she said is actually right, you can see that Sting plays cello in the original clip. Moreover, there are countless performances of Sting playing the cello. Plus, Sting used to play cello in a Jazz band before reaching fame. That's actually during these performances that he was nicknamed Sting for the first time : " He gained his nickname after his habit of wearing a black and yellow jumper with hooped stripes with the Phoenix Jazzmen. " (wikipedia) But in the end: YES! Sting plays the bass when he was part of the Police.

Sting is almost childlike in his love for music. This man uses every color when he paints his lyrics and melodies. He is inspired by so many musical genres, and is unafraid to try something new or different. I am willing to bet a million dollars that over his career he has include more musical instruments than any other contemporary artist. I have seen him 5 times in concert and wouldn’t hesitate to see him again. I would love to see him one more time with The Police. If I had to describe his songs the two words I would use would be a complex purity. While his vocals are often buttery smooth, it is the notes surrounding them that bring the emotional gravity to his songs. One song that is often overlooked is I Burn For You. There are two versions, one from his days in The Police, and one when he was solo. My favorite is the solo version, but I suggest you give them both a chance.

(Many stringed instruments use the same tunings per string. "Playing them" is a matter of technique therefore, learning how to gain the best effects of each one, not necessarily learning new finger-placements. Guitars the weird one because many, many composers and songwriters change strings' tunings which gives the instrument more or less emphasis on certain strings or notes. Most guitars aren't, but just about every guitarist experimented with 'tunings'.)
