Thanks for your video. I would say (ironically) it’s nice to know I live in the poorest province of Canada. I know very little about economics but on a cultural point of view NB could have revenues coming from movie shooting projects. NB is so behind compared to other maritime provinces (even NF is getting big american productions). There is so much demand nowadays for content in all the different platforms of streaming that it’s a shame we are not taking part of it...

There are some fundamental problems with your video. Its a good video though, and apart from an economic developer in Moncton we hardly see it really discussed. Some quick history is worth noting, for one, New Brunswick actually used to have the LOWEST tax burden outside Alberta up to about fifteen years ago. But if you look at a place like Norway, they have TONS of wealth. Is it from immigration? Not at all. Its from control and responsible management of resources. New Brunswick has always been a colonial province, that means the population has no control over its resources. About ten years ago the Fraser Instituted used to rank New Brusnwick as the best place in the hemisphere for mining. They said this because they are a right wing think tank which means the more you give away your resources cheaply, the more Fraser will like you. As we saw with lumber the province is SO badly run that our stumpage fees are not even aligned to market prices like most provinces. So last year when lumber skyrocketed, we saw NO gain in provincial revenues. Its a simple fact that if you give everything away, then you will be poor. New Brunswick LITERALLY gave its potash away in exchange for jobs. But even that wasn't enough and the company left. Bathurst now literally has nothing now that the mines are closed, go look at hte budget to see how much revenues the provine got from royalties. The province literally makes more money from park admission fees than it gets from ALL its natural resources, and this province has NO sports industry, entertainment industry, financial industry, technology industry or research industry. In short, it is a resource industry that gets no money from resources. In the past it got it in the form of income tax from the jobs that resource extraction provided, but now technlogy has made MOST of those jobs redundant. I get that 'quest for wealth' likely just looks at wealth for the sake of it, but 'growth' doesn't actually mean wealth. And of course Irving has lots of wealth, and is always getting more. Immigration is no more a ticket to wealth than the mayor of monctons claim that 'a rising tide raises all boats'. In general what people assume is that immigrants will HAVE wealth and bring it into te province, which only means you have more wealthy people to make the poorer population seem less in proportion. There is a whole complex set of reasons why New brunswick is poor, and a ten minute video isn't going to cut it, although its a good start. The province has been a 'have not' essentially since the first decade of confederation. And the federal government also plays a pretty large part in keeping the province poor, its not a coincidence that ALL of the maritimes are 'have not'. In BC it was largely liberalization with Asia that brought new money into BC, but of course BC is also giving away resources as well, it just has more of them. Meanwhile the largest economies are now in the pacific, and with less trade with europe, this region suffers from a lack of outside trade. But also, in times past countries in the 'middle' of trade routes USED to do quite well, which is largely why they are engulfed into national governments. For one thing, its a national program that determined that Gaspe is part of Quebec, and not New Brunswick. If the maritime region could, say, control shipping into ontario, then a levy on goods going into ONtario would have the province awash in more money than we ever get in equalization. But as part of a 'national franchise' of course we are not allowed to do such things, and can't even control our own fisheries industries. So like poverty in ANY region, its a complex mix of federal and provincial and even local policies. Combined with low educational scores and little interest in the fastest growing markets, its certainly no SUPRISE that he province is poor.

No. In Canada a GP or specialist can't be forced to take a patient he or she doesn't want to because they are private entities/incorporated; though they have a legal duty to provide a certain standard of skill and care to their existing patients. The legal duty of care is created when a physician agrees to treat a patient who has requested his or her services.

NB is no longer the province with the most “affordable” homes. Higher taxes in NB along with higher prices for energy and food combined with not so good wages was never the utopia of cheap houses being touted. No lack of people here living in poverty that own a house. Poverty due to costs of necessities is prevalent here and most new comers from other provinces that cashed in on pricey homes that now live here are pretty much oblivious to it and don’t care that many that could have afforded a home in NB, are now priced out of the market and either have to leave the province or have to rent realizing their proportion of renter household income spent on rent and utilities is much higher here than some equivalent size places in BC and Ontario where there are better jobs with higher pay. There is a reason why NB had a net migration of only half of one percent last year.

Don't be deceived my friend. Some of the wealthiest dynasties in Canada are from here. The government is mismanaged due to bias interest to a certain society in the province. Powerful players in the economy don't allow the govt. to get their hands on hard earned money. In 2013, Saint John, NB ranked within the top 10 highest ranking economies per capita in Canada. Not even Halifax made the list and it's nearly 4 times the size of Saint John. Also, 50% of New Brunswick's economy is due to trade with the United States. Now, for someone who is from here, they can tell you who is responsible for for the bulk of NB's trade and presence in many parts of the North American continent. As for the poor people here, well, they rely on govt to support them. No further explanation required for those demographics.

The Irvings are party responsible for this and bask under it. Also the lack of folk indifferent to what causes the social and financial ills of this province. Too many here have their heads in the sand. The lack of freedom of press here doesn't help matters much and newsrooms will be easily silenced when it comes to criticizing big business, local and regional politics, and voices of dissent; thank the stars for the internet and social media, but that's not enough. Problem is a politician knows that in this province that if he or she wants a good long career in politics, you have to cozy up to the Irvings more so than the electorate. This is the reality when a province is pretty much owned and governed by a series of tax free trusts in Bermuda.

Government here is basically bought and paid for. NB is the only "company province". Change is very hard to do here; folk that criticize local and regional politics, and big business are usually silenced. This province is a bastion of the door mat mentality; and the Irvings that pretty much govern and own the province bask under it. The voice of change and reason is rare here. Many progressive and caring folk have come here to try to help, but usually give up. There is a reason why this is one of the least sought after places for Canadians to live.
