While working in Edinburgh I went into the National Museum of Scotland on my lunch hour and climbed a narrow stairway leading to a small gallery, and there she was in all her glory-- Sargent's Lady Agnew. I stood alone with her for 15 minutes. She looks really abstract close up but 6 meters away she has the soul of a living woman.

Nobody in my view has given a more clear and thorough instruction on painting the human head as Mr Sanden . You are bound to do a better job if you follow his instruction. And what a superb job on painting Sargent's ,"Lady Agnew"! I bow in admiration and gratitude... .

An excellent demonstration; I learned a lot. Two things, however: 1) I don't think that Sargent painted in sections. I believe that he attacked the entire canvas, working from dark to light as a whole. 2) That "blossom" in the model's right hand is actually a rolled handkerchief. Lady Agnew was quite ill when she sat for Sargent.

Sargent was uncommonly humble about his talents. Once, while playing an early version of hacky-sack with Queen Victoria, she complimented him on a recent portrait commission he had completed. He answered, "Shit, that ain't nothin'. I was just screwin' around and junk." He's said to have then shrugged so deeply that the contents of his pockets tumbled down onto the palace driveway by the royal basketball hoop. History is fascinating.

Thank you for sharing this....Sargent was really a great painter and inspirational...John Howard Sanden did a terrific job of painting and copying Sargent...his use of paint, observations, and paint strokes were very helpful...one understands better the approach to painting that Sargent had and which Sanden also uses - a direct or alla prima style which is drawing with wet paint to achieve your results. Thanks again for posting and thanks to Mr. Sanden.

Taken me two days instead Of his three hours and im not ready. He IS very good but explains what he do wich is not really what all artists do- you he better they get the more secrets they have and for me this was great.

"That is why Mr. Sargent often repainted the head a dozen times, he told me that he had done no less than sixteen of Mrs. Hammersley." "Sargent worked in multiple sessions and used multiple methods to his portraits. One of Sargent's most famous portraits took over a year, Portrait of Madame X." There is some misconception on here relating to the "speed" of which Sargent worked. I would say that was the least of his worries. Getting it right, was the goal. His style leads us to believe it was one magic stroke and done but that is an illusion. Sure, Sargent was probably faster and more accurate than anyone, after all, he was the greatest. Sanded implies that in the beginning of the video. The painting of The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit by Sargent required over 80 sittings. If he was magically fast and accurate he would have completed it in one sitting with time left over. When you look at these portraits does anyone care how long it took? We only marvel at how magnificent. Sanded offers us a chance to watch him try to break down, in HIS style, how Sargent may have arrived at this beautiful portrait. He isn't competing with Sargent. He knows he is not Sargent. But Sanden has had an illustrious career as a portrait artist and is still very busy in his eighties. Sanded said this in a recent interview when asked to reflect on his career: "Two causes for regret. First, I regret that I did not decide sooner to move to New York. The thrill of living in the art capital of the world, combined with (for the first time) a serious study of painting at the Art Students League under Samuel Oppenheim - these were totally life-changing experiences. Second, I regret that I did not find a way to combine my exciting adventure with bravura, direct painting - to combine this with a determination to achieve more psychological depth in my portraits. Others achieved this, men such as John S. Sargent, William Orpen and Augustus John. Alas, I do not share their greatness."

While I appreciate his courage, he doesn't seem to see values or match colors well. It was painful to watch him lay down the wrong colors and miss value shifts. He seems to "see" more from his head than from his eyes.

P,S wondering if the fabric of the dress was shot silk, very popular back then, where the weft and weave of the silk are different colours , giving a pinkish, blue, green tinge depending on how the light hit it. Or Sargent could have been hinting at flesh tones beneath the dress as in the transluscent sleeves!

The eyes are different from the original painting. He started from a very precise pencil drawing ( using a projector ). The drawing transmitted well the eyes' expression, until Sanden started to paint and spoiled it. Not by copying mecanically you will get a good copy.
