I am describing how to position the thumb of your left hand on the cello to give your fingers and hand more freedom. Teachers talk a lot about the left elbow, but it isn't just the elbow which is responsible for a relaxed and free left hand (and therefore a good intonation, good vibrato and an articulated sound).
The thumb plays a very important role and is the key.
