Slapping, stabbing - even spanking - the canvas with the brush, is a way to capture that mystery -- it's in the LOOSENESS of the brushstroke!
From this week’s episode about John Singer Sargent's painting of Frederick Law Olmsted in 1933.
In a letter written from Olmsted to Thomas A. Fox on Sept. 13, 1933, Olmsted describes Sargent's way of painting as follows:
"... (Sargent) would stand off, some twenty feet or so from his subject and the canvas, very deliberately but very alertly looking back and forth from one to the other and mixing a brush full of paint on his palette, then at last give a little lift of his shoulders and with a very springy motion for so heavy a man walk forward swiftly to the canvas and make a brush-stroke like an arrow going to the bullseye".
