I can't believe he made a video about Theming without mentioning not a single Phantasialand coaster. F.L.Y has by far of the best themed experience, from the Area itself, to the queue, over to the station, the dispatch and pre-show before the launch as well as one or two onride effects while flying through this flawlessly themed area with guests on the Midway. It's just perfect.

I'm very excited to see how Cosmic Rewind and the Tron coaster come out at Disney, because it seems like those are going to be in the Expedition Everest model of a genuinely intense coaster combined with heavy theming elements, as opposed to a dark ride with some mild coaster elements like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

El Toro's theme stops at the bull? This isn't my thought because someone else expressed it to me, but the sensory experience of the track IS the theme but conveyed in the abstract through its airtime hills, as if you were being bucked off of a bull. Just in the same way that Mako portrays the aggression and agility of the shark, or Montu is an abstract expression of the war god's capabilities.

I love themed coasters - It's one of my favourite things to indulge in when the POVs start to get predictable. Like, I love The Smiler, Oblivion and F.L.Y solely for the theming despite having been on none of them. It's why Wickerman and Galactica are my competing top rides, Wickerman has the brilliant theming, while I just about prefer Galactica's experience - I have no doubt that if Alton Towers did as little as spruce up the station or add the soundtrack to the ride, That would undoubtedly be my favourite. But, like, I can spend hours watching through all the marketing schemes and theming videos put out for The Smiler, hence it being first to mind.
@mrscsi6472

Alton Towers does theming much more efficiently than anyone else. Pretty much all the theming for Oblivion is a giant hole in the ground with the words “Don’t look down” spray painted above it. That’s hype as fuck.

I agree halfway~ When the coaster delivers as a stand alone coaster, most theming is not going to make it so much better that it could become my favorite coaster.. because the layout demands your attention, and so thats the main point, and thats what makes it great. but for one of the examples you brought up, the various big thunder mountains, I yearn to ride all of these because of the theming having an immersive mountain that you not only ride around, but ride through.. super cool.. now of course of the BTMountain rides actually have fun layouts.. like the one that has a switch track and launches.. but those layouts still arent prime pickins that outshine the theming.. if this all makes sense :p

As a European I find it funny that Americans consider a ride name "theming". Like calling a ride "Cliffhanger" or " Flying Dinosaur" doesn't make the theming in my opinion. I understand that a ride type can support a rides' theme though as you can see in Efteling's "Baron" where the dive supports the backstory of a dropping into a goldmine. :D

I love theming. When a wood coaster is tossing you around and going into its structure, of course it might not really matter. The thing is, Hagrids motor bikes wouldn’t be that good without theming. None of the Disney coasters would be good without theming. Even rock’n rollercoaster looks and feels awful with the lights on. Some rides such as velocicoaster don’t really require theming, but we can all agree that we’d prefer the ride with theming than without.

Theme only works if the ride compliments it and vice versa. Hagrids nails it. To elaborate, Gringots falls flat on the ride itself but the theming is great. Velocicoaster has the ride, but the theme falls flat. It's no wonder why even on a slow day you're waiting at least 90 min to ride Hagrids. It's the difference between a ride and an experience.

on your point on Cliffhanger, I definitely agree with the whole naming thing that you are going at. this is my home park, and I was a ride op the summer they revealed the ride and honestly aside from the lackluster name they are really going in with the theming of this ride and im quite excited given its under Six Flags. Our park president is really trying to get more theming into the parks and im all for it, even putting in work on the rebranding of the area the ride is located in (Crackaxle Canyon, which is diverting from its original western theme to a steam punk theming with the additions of Dare Devil Dive and Cliffhanger). of course, im not expecting Disney / Universal levels of theming, but even just enough for more queue theming is heading in the right direction

i remember being a bit upset when bizzaro was getting re-themed, personally everyone ik says they don't care, but in my opinion all it needed was a repaint of the blue and purple, the orange and green don't go together, i think having a ride called medusa is cool, but the ride itself has 0 theming for medusa herself, bizzaro you would enter in the drop and go through a superman logo, but for some reason they left it on, which makes 0 sense for the theming of medusa, they could have at least had like a tunnel where you like enter in a snake mouth or something idk, bizzaro had the voice (which would like work for a bit and then not work but they tried) , fire, and smoke, even without the voice in the backround, it made you feel like you were fighting off bizzaro, in medusa you have the fire and smoke, but it now feels out of place, i am not here to say that bizzaro is some amazing b&m roller coaster, bc it is not, but damb, bizzaro has always been tacky and just one of those rides you go on just bc why not, but now it is like..why

I always say that I’m not that bothered about theming, and then I see coasters in the US just plopped down and realised OK I care more than I thought. Though my favourite ever theming pieces got removed a few years ago, they were the ski jumpers around Avalanche at BPB and I miss them because they were so 1980s (which makes sense the ride opened in 1988) but the skis and the technique looked so comically old fashioned it made me smile every time I went past them. Funnily enough, I actually had this very discussion with my sister the other day. I do enjoy the theming (to the extent that Disney and Universal do it) but sometimes I just want to have a coaster with high speed, lots of inversions, air time, screaming and I don't care about the theming. I enjoy Big Thunder Mountain but it doesn't give me the same kind of satisfaction as Tatsu or X2 do. Different experiences. If I want more theming, I'm going to go to Universal or Disney (or Phantasialand or Efteling), which have some nice coasters that are fun to ride, but if I'm craving extreme coasters I'd go to Magic Mountain or another Six Flags park (though sadly that's very far away as I live in Europe).

Places like six flags or cedar point don’t really need theming. The coasters are too big, and they focus mainly on thrills so it would be kinda pointless to add too much theming you’re going too fast. Places like universal or Disney have their rides focused in entirely themed lands so it would look awkward and stand out if they aren’t themed.

I think you missed one important difference: Queue-theming and actual ride theming. For me it's more important if the queue (where i spend a good amount of time just waiting) has nice views, an interesting story to tell (pre shows like baron 1898) or have an interesting building/animatronic whatever. Themed coasters are nice but often you don't get too much from it while riding...

I always thought theming "pluses" a ride. Six Flags and others would "start out" theming, but when figures effects would cRaP OUT! They wouldn't fix them and eventually remove them. SFoTexas had a villain on the lift of the flume ride. Had the long thin mustache and a hand saw. He sawed a tree that was supposed to "fall" on the boat. There was also the recorded sound of the saw in "action". This effect was copied from SFo Georgia. There was a Paul Bunyan like character with an AXE that threatened passengers. You can find "faint" vids on YT. There are plenty of coasters & flumes that could benefit from even minor additions. It could also be changed to suit season or holiday. It greatly improves repeat business.

Spoilers for some amazingly themed coasters. You have been warned. A park with amazingly themed rides (a couple of them coasters) is my home park Efteling. Most of the coasters are incredibly themed. Bird Rok literally has a huge animatronic bird as an entrance. It's themed after one of the travel of Sindbad, a middle Eastern merchant. The queue is decently themed. But by far the best aspect is the on board audio while you fly through the dark. Then there's the Flying Dutchman (my personal favourite). It combines a water coaster with a darkride and a walkthrough. It's obviously themed after the haunted ship. The ride is nicely themed after the Dutch golden age. The queue line is Willem van Der Decken (flying Dutchman's captain) house. There walls are burnt, the books in the library are damaged and there's a mirror occasionally displaying a demonic version of van Der Decken's face. His wife is singing, longing for her husband to return. A painting of a ship is nearly split in two, revealing a smuggler's hall, in which the captain's stolen riches are hidden. The room above is occasionally set aflame as the captain dramatically speaks out the curse he cast upon himself, forever sailing the sees because he sailed on Easter. The ominous feeling fades away as you enter a pub. At long last you enter the pitch black port, the ride's station. The darkride begins, which is short but sweet. You leave the port. With huge ships right beside the measly sloop you're in. Away you go, out into the dark. Mist surrounds you as you're barely capable of seeing the person right next to you, not can you see the light attached to the sloop. The Dutchman suddenly appears with lightning bolts splitting the sea. The ship reals you in. As the demonic figurehead stares at you with red eyes. You drop down into the ship and suddenly come to a standstill. A sculpture of the captain you face changed into a demonic skull supported by an equally demonic laugh. You too shall sail until the end of time. The coaster starts, which is solid, but not that thrilling. It does act like a great finale to an overall experience. George and the dragon is a duelling GCI with solid theming. You fight the animatronic dragon (which unfortunately doesn't move and breathe fire anymore) with either fire or water. While in the station the winning side is greeted by banners and cheers as the losers are met with boos. Baron 1898 is a phenomenally themed dive coaster. The lift structure with the wheels pulling up the train is just superb. The pit with the white women singing in it gives me goosebumps still. Entering the mining complex there are three pre-shows, one of which on board the train itself. There's actual mining equipment used as decoration. In the first pre-show the Baron promises you riches as the white women warn you not to enter the mine. The second one is the Baron informing you on how to enter the drop vehicles. The last one is the white women telling you that pride comes before the fall. When you're on top of the structure, a bell rings as you face the white women, singing. Even the ride's exit is nicely themed with real life props. The final themed coaster is Max and Moritz. I'm not quite part of the target audience. But the station is nice and the theming is good. A German-ish style with a creative and childlike touch. Not many parks would spend this much money on a 'duelling' Mack powered coaster and its theming. The coasters are just the tip of the iceberg.

you can't have a massive ride with awesome theming, you have to compromise somewhere so parks should find a balance, hagrids has awesome teaming but it's a smaller ride while to theme something like mako would be way to expensive we can look at velocicoaster for example, inital portion relatively low to the ground and themed, once the ride pops up into the top hat alll the theming is gone, so enthusiasts and gp have to understand if we want big we have to abdicate theming. cedar point is just speed runing RCT3 campaign so we shouldn't mention them

To me it depends. If the coaster is still great without the theming, then the theming is a nice, added bonus and can elevate a ride to another level. I mean, Taron would still work as a fun coaster if plopped on an empty plot of land, the theming just elevates the sense of speed and pushes the ride to something really worth talking about. On the flipside, if a ride is build around it´s theming then that theming becomes essential for the ride to make sense. Strip away Hagrid´s theming and you are left with a awkwardly paced coaster. Or the former Space Center at Phantasialand (aka Temple of the Night Hawk, aka whatever they are calling it now), the whole coaster lived from it´s space theming, it really made you feel as if you where flying through space, with a satellite and Astronaut as a centerpiece you would regularly fly towards and some asteroids to dodge it was a great experience. When the made the retheme, and you have to use word theme lightly here, it just hammered down that the thing is essentially a mine train in a black box, something that wasn´t anywhere near as obvious with the proper space theme.
