The Freshman Foundation® helps young athletes BE READY for every next step in the game of life through mental performance coaching.
In this clip from Episode 74 of The Freshman Foundation® Podcast, Annie Delre @coachanniedelre shares how her experience as a “mean girl” has helped her learn that forgiveness is such a powerful tool.
I love this clip because of my own experiences with forgiveness. Many years ago, I first heard someone say, “Resentment is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” That just floored me.
My own resentments towards people in my life were holding me back from fulfilling my potential as a human being. Resentment created negative thoughts and feelings that were distracting me from directing my attention to what I could control. Beyond that, I have since learned that sometimes people are just not capable of behaving in a way that we would like them to behave. Rather than blaming, I learned to accept and forgive knowing that it is not my fault.
This line of thinking has a great many applications for young athletes. You cannot control your coaches, parents, and teammates behavior towards you. It is unlikely to be personal. Rather, they may just be lacking the resources necessary (in that moment) to give you what you need or want. Focus on what you can control.
