This was cultivation design on how to deal with Rayse all along, that is terrifying how craft she is. Putting Nightblood into a play knowing at some point will be used to kill Rayse meanwhile cultivate Taravangian to take up the shard. She manages all of this right under the nose of Odium while Odium thinks she hiding from him and scared.

@NemisCassander

@@gunpowderthegreat6653 The real kicker is that _we don't know_ if this is part of Cultivation's plan. We have always _assumed_ that Cultivation and Honor are forces opposing Odium. Maybe... Cultivation just opposed Rayse? This makes sense, from Shardic Intent. It's clear in RoW that Rayse is losing control of Odium; or, IOW, that he isn't being a very good Odium. Cultivation (as a Shard) would see that and try to 'cultivate' a better Odium. This does _not_ bode well for the Cosmere, as that would mean that she doesn't have a problem with Shards whose Intent is inimical to life (and most humans would agree that Odium qualifies). She just wants to see Shards become more cultivated. It's very interesting that the Intent isn't Growth, but Cultivation, which implies Intention.

Watching your video gave me an idea, since Nightblood drains investiture from whatever it kills and supposedly it drained Odium until it was full, could that mean that Taravodium is less powerful than other shards and that provides a way for him to be defeated, or are shards able to replenish their investiture (idk if that has been explained at some point)

I was also thinking about this, but I remember somewhere in the lore that shards have infinite power, it just always has to be bound by certain things. I think it has been pretty well established that objects already infused with investiture are harder to affect in this way. Metal is already one of the hardest things to invest, so adding already existing investiture on top of that might make it impossible. It's the same reason why it's harder to lash someone with armor on, or who is themselves radiant, and I think Kaladin even struggled with lashing something during the sparring with Vasher? Can't remember if it was him directly or one of the infused cloths, but I feel like this happened at some point.

Wait, if whoever holds Nightblood is the one to determine if they are evil, then why can Szeth weird it without killing himself? Szeth absolutely seems like the kind of person to think of himself as evil. Especially when you consider Warbreaker, and how many people in that book killed themself upon the sword. Szeth seems much more likely to consider himself evil than a few random guards and a fisherman.
@Arjun-jq1wx
Жыл бұрын
He gave himself his punishments, and his worldview revolving around his lack of authority to dictate his own fate likely extends to Nightblood's influences. Therefore, the sword doesn't make him kill himself because to Szeth's mind, giving himself an "easy out" by assuming his own authority to judge himself as evil or not is more evil than ridding the world of himself. At least, that's my theory here, so the sword trusts Szeth to find the optimal way to rid the world of Evil, and removing himself from it seems to Szeth a net-Evil action.

So is Odium's shard weaker after Nightblood consumed an incredible amount of investiture upon killing him? Mathematically it would seem to be the case. Nightblood max's out in that moment and draws that power directly from Odium so his hunger is finally satiated. This is significant because Taravangian doesn't have a benchmark to see how strong Odium was originally. He could assume the shard is just as powerful as it was considering he only has the power after Nightblood has drained some of it. In the end it may be a negligible amount of investure, but on the flip side it may have also significantly softened Todium without him even realizing it. Could Taravangian unknowingly given the Alethi an advantage in the face of a stunted Shard?

I recently discovered that Nightblood was inspired by Sanderson’s love for author Michael Moorcock’s writing, so that makes sense ♥️🗡 Edit: Can’t watch this yet, but I’ll be back after I read Warbreaker 😀

Oh it's so cool to hear where his influence may have came from. Thanks for the awesome insight!

"Brandon Sanderson has written an heroic fantasy depending on originality of character and plot. His heroines and heroes are outstanding -- especially Vasher, the Warbreaker, whose special relationship with his sentient sword is both sardonic and sinister. The mysteries of life after death, of identity and destiny, the politics of magic, are unveiled through three-dimensional characters. "Not only has Sanderson drawn a freshly imagined world and its society, he has also given us a plot full of unexpected twists and turns. In subtle prose, notable for its quiet irony, Sanderson tells the story of two sisters and the god they are doomed to marry. Anyone looking for a different and refreshing fantasy novel will be delighted by this exceptional tale of magic, mystery and the politics of divinity. It's fair to say Warbreaker might even take your breath away!" This is a Micheal Moorcock review of Warbringer, I think that's just wholesome considering his use of the sentient sword trope inspired Sanderson a bit here.

@@bendecius4976 “It’s fair to say Warbreaker might even take your breath away.” - I see what he did there 🙃 I ended up loving Warbreaker. It’s one of my favorite Sanderson novels. I just started reading Sanderson’s Skyward series. Sadly, it’s not connected to the Cosmere, but I’m still enjoying it.

You might enjoy a Tim Pratt book called Liar’s Blade. He’s an amazing writer, and loves a good talking sword.

I might be focusing on a small passing comment in the video, but I am pretty sure Vasher had explained, *spoilers for RoW* maybe in RoW, maybe sooner, that it is easier living in Roshar as a Returned, cause he doesn't need to consume Breaths, cause Stormlight is investiture? As Breaths are investiture on their own, yet limited, and Stormlight is practically limitless, especially after Dalinar learnt how to open the perpendicularity - Vasher can basically have a never-ending supply of Investiture to survive, and that is without mentioning his own powers of suppression of Breath, and the fact he has such a huge amount of it stored that he could consume one each week and still have a buncha to spare.

2:11 thereabouts - Have Shashara and Vasher travelled the Cosmere, or just been to Roshar apart from Nalthis? They're Returned and hence they're Connected to Nalthis, no? Like how Kelsier can't leave Scadrial, they can't leave Nalthis.. They must have found some way to do so - maybe a deal with Cultivation. But that deal is most likely not tied to the Nightwatcher's possession of Nightblood - as we know Vasher and Shashara have been to Roshar pre-Nightblood. 🧐 Also 4:07 thereabouts - Nightblood works similar to a Shardblade no? It has to be in a person's body for enough time to consume all of their Investiture. So getting nicked by Nightblood will kill that part of the body, but the rest are still functionable, no?

So technically, nightblood knows that taravangium killed odium. Do you think that he will end up telling szeth that?

Nightblood is so interesting! This also makes me extremely curious about Warbreaker 2/Nightblood and especially Yesteel. Yesteel is the only character(that we know of) that knows how to create weapons of Nightblood’s caliber, and is willing to do so(Vasher wouldn’t). Is he responsible for creating Vivenna’s sword? Why? And does he have anything to do with why they are on Roshar? If he is still alive, he is easily one of the most dangerous people in the Cosmere, due to his knowledge. Definitely could see him working with the Ghostbloods too.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who mismanaged the order I read Sanderson's novels. What a moment that must of been in WoR. I just kind of sat there scratching my head like, 'huh, a talking sword...'

I read The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance and then while I was waiting for Oathbringer to come out, I read the rest of the Cosmere available including Warbreaker. By then I had forgotten Szeth got a talking sword and what it said to him. But I loved Nightblood and it became one of my favorite characters so when I did a reread of WoR I was pleasantly surprised it was there at the end lol NB and Szeth together are great!

I read this theory on nightblood where he was commanded to "destroy evil". He has no concept of evil, yet he consumes investiture. Leading to the thought that investiture is evil. It was an interesting theory as it would lead on to believe Adolnolisum

Recently did a reread of all the Cosmere books. I read Warbreaker before Stormlight. When I got to the part where Nightblood is first drawn in Oathbringer when all the Skybreakers are sent to kill the criminals. I can't believe how much of that scene I missed the first time around. The effect on all the light and color in the area was so amazingly cool. It made me giddy.
