My favourite memory of Medieval 2 was setting up a whole army of longbowmen with stakes into nearly a full encriclement of stakes, with the only entry being opposite where the enemy deployed and stuffed with two spearmen schiltrons. The enemy cav annihilated themselves on the stakes and handed me the win rather than try and break my schiltrons.

The French did not charge the English with cavalry at Agincourt. There was some minor cavalry action at the beginning of the battle but the main french advance was carried out on foot. It was the earlier battle of Crecy where english infantry repelled multiple charges by the french cavalry.

The French mounted men-at-arms attempted to charge the longbowmen at Agincourt but failed to complete the charge due to the longbowmen relocating to positions fortified by palings(stakes). The cavalry retreat from their incomplete charge ended up causing disorder on the advance of dismounted men-at-arms moving at the English center. While the cavalry's impact wasn't felt(literally or figuratively) in the battle it does show that the original French plan sought to deal with longbowmen that the French army had failed to exterminate at Poitiers and Crecy, in an alpha strike, then to follow up with their dismounted core engaging and surrounding the English center. Because the cavalry failed and the French center proceeded to advance without their flanks secured, the constant flank shots from the English prevented the English center from being surrounded, stymied the French dismounted core and led to their exhaustion and defeat.

In med 2 almost always use guard mode on archers. It also let's you shoot point blank range on infantry if they are engaging that unit, but only some are involved in the fight. That way on walls, you can use a crossbow unit to shoot point blank on guys trying to get on the wall, just don't put them straight on the spot they come to walls, put it next to that. That way one crossbow unit can take out many elites even. It also doesn't matter how many of them die as the unit doesn't lose ammo when losing troops, if a unit has 100 guys with 20 ammo each, it has 2k ammo. But if someone wipes out 50 guys before those guys shoot, they still have that whole amount of 2k arrows with them, unlike in warhammer games.

Bro that circlejerk belief died 10 years ago. For one, I don't know what you're reacting to in this video because most of the units don't even move, and the ones that Legend does move, the horses, do blob up. Number two RTW/M2TW had plenty of their own blobs especially in city battles and city centers. But more importantly there's something to be said about RTW/M2TW's magical unit cohesion, which feels more like a forcefield rather than a group of men arranged in rows/columns. The newer games in the series (not talking about Warhammer series) have far smoother, more granular unit cohesion. Heavier units like pikes and heavy infantry are more solid and hold lines compared to lightly armored infantry, which makes far more sense than whatever it is you see in Medieval 2. I know this isn't exactly the place to have this discussion because Legend's fanbase are the perfunctory TW neckbeards who've been jerking themselves raw for over a decade about RTW/M2TW, but Christ on a Cracker, you people's penchant for self-gas lighting is astounding!

I remember my very first experience using artillery to defend my settlement in Total War Rome (The original). I positioned my Hastati in the middle of a street to hole back and mob up the enemy. Then told my catapults to fire into the mob. The very first rock smacked right into the middle of my men and the second flew out 200 yards into my own wall. I have learned to use fire at ground mode and not to target the units directly. Much smaller accuracy circle and the AI on your catapults won't try to "lead" the target if its moving or shifting directions.

I always use sharpened steaks. 8-10 units of longbowmen in the front, with 4 units of spearmen defending behind them, and 2 units of mailed knights on each wing. Archers soften up attackers, enemy cavalry charges, archers fall back on their own accord, enemy cavalry dies, archers move up and rain volleys on whoever is left. If enemy infantry rush the line, your spearmen hold them back while archers loose arrows into enemy infantry formations, then run them down when they route. Works every time lol
