I have a quick question, for my whole life I've always learned that a king can not only move backwards, but also skip more tiles at once during one move (instead of moving 1 spot, it could move more spots in 1 direction). Is this false? I've only played this game with my grandfather who taught me how to play, but I'm starting to doubt if it's a legit rule. Thanks!

Yes, you are right. There are different styles in checkers with different rules and ways to play. Your style is very popular it called the Flying Kings. The style i am showing is the American and English style also known as "Draughts". The way you were taught is correct and must of been a lot of fun playing games with your grandfather. I was taught the English and American style by my Dad. i like to play both the American and the Flying Kings style. Thank you for your question.

Finally someone who knows advanced tactics. One is lucky if they can find someone who knows the rules of the game on KZitem... let alone finding someone who really knows how to play on an advanced level. I've played for years and know many advanced tactics, but there is always more to learn. I look forward to seeing your other videos. Thank you!

So is the long jump not valid for kings? I see kings jump far in some videos.

I play a different style, only kings can jump another king, and there are no forced jumps. Instead, if you miss to jump because you didn't notice, and your opponent notices, he/she can just remove the piece that missed its chance to jump. We call it "puffing/breathing/blowing rule".

At 2:08 you could have won the game by simply moving red to square 14 that would leave no moves for white

@Dcon6393 Thank you! It is good that you looked at the 6-9 variation. After 6-9 7-14, 9-18 22-15, 19-10, 17-14 (will draw), 10-17 21-14, A draw from here. White needs to be careful. For example 3-7 25-22, 7-11 14-10, 11-15 10-7, 5-9 7-3. etc. The only force win for red is the 19-15 move. I am glad you mention this variation as it adds to the beauty of this end-game problem by Tom Wiswell.

that is a nice move, but the first I saw was 6 to 9, which would have ended in a 3 on 3 with both of reds kings still alive. is that a good play? or is 19 to 15 better?

thats why i'm confused as from young we are playing flying kings and the game is more exciting and can finish faster. Draughts has restriction for the kings movement. Flying kings is much better

@checkercycle wow, that just adds to the complexity when a 3 on 3 is a draw when a 3 on 4 is a win. I would have made the 6 to 9 and tied haha

At 1:46 he would have lost his king because since he was able to get the white one on the same lane, they would’ve taken it because he could’ve ate it

Video position. 2.54. According to the international rules. A single checker may not jump a King. How does your white checker jump a red king?
@omardelisser4545

The red crown should capture the singe when you moved the red at the top.. That play was open for several moves.

My wife and I just played a game. She had 2 kings and I had 4 kings, 2 pawns. She was stuck in the corner and split her kings back into pawns along her back row. She said it was a rule that her and her family grew up doing. Is that even possible? To turn 2 pieces into 4 like that? I thought it was BS lol
@garrysmith1029

Sounds like a lot of bs like she didn't want to lose. If she said her family played like that sounds like a made up rule

Yes in some versions men pieces can jump backwards, in some other variations that's not allowed, there's many styles around the world but most if not all are really just either: Flying kings, men jump backwards, maximum must be met Flying kings, men cannot jump backwards, maximum must be met No flying kings, men cannot jump backwards, maximum doesn't matter, which is the one in the video.
