Oof. Long time listener, but the subject matter has foeced me to become a first time commenter because I think you'll find my story relatable. Two months ago I crashed my mountain bike and had a concussion. It wasn't a serious crash, I thought, laughing it off and rolling down the mountain and loading up my bike. Halfway through my coffee I had a fit, blacked out and woke up in hospital. They wanted to do a cat scan, I said sure. Then they said sir, we found something, can we do an MRI scan? I said sure, but obviously this was getting serious. Turns out I had brain cancer. Terror, anxiety etc, all of this went on while I remained upbeat for my family and friends. I was a bit bummed (selfishly) as I had a trip with Porsche to Germany that I'd need to skip but hey, this was onviously imperative. For greater context, this was about two months into my latest health and strength journey. I've been exercising for years, struggling with my weight but in January felt like everything finally clicked. Started replaying old Mind Pumps and similar in the background in my humble home gym and started seeing progress, reall progress. I'd upped my protein, added creatine to my diet, did less exercises but with more intensity, it was working. And a large part of what I felt when I got my diagnosis was damnit. This is going to derail me. There's a lot more I could add, like how my dad died from a heart attack at 48 years old (and I was 45 now). And how in January I weighed 265lbs, but managed to get down to 240lbs at the time of my crash. That included a fair amount of recomp, so my doctor took one look at me and said, you've got nothing to worry about, you're in good shape. It brought me close to tears knowing that had I crashed two months earlier, I would have struggled to survive that surgery. In fact, had I not crashed in the first place, I might not have known I had brain cancer until it manifested on the highway, car fully laden with my family. Damn. Which is why, even with brain cancer, I consider myself extremely fortunate. Then there's the fact that because of the fall, we caught the cancer before chemo or radiation was even necessary. I think I might get away with medication or a shot in my ass once a month, I remain hopeful. So here's the thing. Lifting. Lifting made me stronger, and the fundamentals around it, protein I believe is a big one. You can rebuild your muscles, you can heal from surgery, it's all the same and as long as you're fueling correctly you can overcome anything. My loved ones want me to take it easy but I have to go at my speed which is fairly conservative now, but I feel great. Creatine I believe has also been a boon. There's even evidence to suggest it helps greatly with mental benefits which as you can imagine is really important to me right now. Two weeks after my fall, I had my surgery. It happened on a Monday, I was home Thursday. The doctors and nurses were impressed with my recovery, and the next week I started back up in my gym. I grabbed a pair of 5lbs dumbbells and worked on finding my form on all the basic movements, wll the while convincing my family I was taking it easy. It felt great, and three weeks later, once my head healed from the nine staples that were holding it together, I slipped on my MTB helmet and returned to the trail I fell. Albeit the chill circular route next to it, and not the crazy downhill bit where I fell. Today, I feel great. I fought my urges to get back right away, I introduced fitness back into my routine, (first with walking) and continued to eat healthy. I'm down to 230lbs, and am back on my bike, albeit a hair slower. My gym routine is my own but based on a lot of great information including yours. A big one was removing some exercises and focusing on 4 or 5 per session, but really making them count. I feel like I have so much more to add, but am wary of rambling - just know that listening to your body or having someone doing it for you can be vital when the road to recovery gets really twisty. Glad your wife is doing better, Adam.

Dear Adam, I’m so glad your back and your wife is on the road to recovery. I’ve been an icu nurse for 20 years. Sepsis can be truly terrifying. If you ever find yourself in a similar situation give me a shout. I would have flown to Mexico just to take the flight home with you. It’s a 4 hour flight for me and I would do this no cost. Everyone needs a hand sometimes. Mexico is a beautiful country but don’t drink the water - I’m guessing someone wet her mouth with a sponge at some point and that is where the stomach problem arose. I really hope the treatment is successful ❤

Need an episode on proper stretching for warming up. Not the static but the ways to prep for different kinds of workouts. I'm getting older and feeling like I need to "warm up" longer
@LatimusChadimus
3 ай бұрын
Anybody with enough experience as well as some of the research have shown that stretching before training can actually result in more injury, especially since your body is wired to already hit certain ranges and if you try to temporarily exceed that range and then go and add load and you go outside of what your body is used to, that's exactly where injury happens. Stretching should be used as a recovery method which is why I do it at night. You are better off to start with either Mobility work or priming yourself. Stretching before training is a good way to hurt yourself
@LatimusChadimus
3 ай бұрын
What I would suggest is starting your morning off with a little bit of movement flow, or using a resistance band to warm up the joints by priming the muscles. I do like doing Tai Chi with a wooden ball, of course you can watch these things on KZitem but I've also come up with my own movements that work better for me, but I do like using resistance bands to mobilize my joints if I am feeling stiff but because I stretch before I go to bed and do a little bit of priming in the morning, I'm generally good to go

Adam I’m so glad your wife is recovering! I went through a similar situation with my husband. He had a fever, was freezing/sweating and started talking jibberish. I took him to the doctor, he took one look at him and said he needs to emergency ASAP. Next thing I know I’m signing paperwork as he’s rushed into surgery to have an abscess removed, he was also septic. In the hospital for two weeks, same conclusion, doctors/specialists couldn’t tell us why or what caused it. He had to have a dual pick line installed in his arm and had to have a home nurse give him antibiotics for 6 weeks after being released from the hospital. This was in the height of covid in 2020. He made a full recovery ❤ Scariest time of my life. Much love to you and Katrina, she will be ok 😊 All Glory to Jesus Christ!!

Its not common but sounds like a Mast Cell Activation Disorder Attack happened to Katrina. If she ever gets an allergic reaction (to whatever) again you should test her Tryptase levels immediately. Perhaps have her tryptase level check when she is feeling better to get a baseline to refer back to in case she ever gets an inflammation cascade again
