Johnny Olson had an amazing voice he had an amazing memory when it came to reading the script for the show he did absolutely flawless. I sense that he was a very shy person when Bob Barker got him on the TV Spotlight with a camera on him he seemed to be very shy he was just such an incredible person with a great voice but deep down I believe he wasn't one to take the spotlight and steal the show I think he just enjoyed his job as the announcer and he was so good at it my mom used to say his wife must be the luckiest woman in the world to wake up to that beautiful voice every morning I thought he was incredible as a kid I always used to think I want to go just to be like him announcer for a show if I had a voice like his he was just amazing he should have been a radio announcer he would have been the most popular person in the radio station but he did the great job that he did for the Price is Right no one is ever announced it as good as he did ever since as a Young man growing up in the time when he was doing the show in the 70s and 80s Johnny Olson and Bob Barker were a great team it's sad to know they're both gone now but never forgotten as soon as the new guy took over the comedian that was it everybody in the family just quit watching The Price is Right Drew Carey is not good he's horrible The Price is Right will never be the same as long as they have Drew Carey I hope that somebody gets rid of them and someone that's really good just like Bob Barker there'll never be another Johnny Olson or Bob Barker to make that show the incredible show that it was sadly missed never forgotten and always remembered. come on down !

Johnny Olson lived in Lewisburg, West Virginia. He rented a condo in Century City, which is only a short drive to Television City and CBS studios where TPIR was taped. Since TPIR only taped 3 days a week back then, Johnny would fly home to Lewsiburg after the Wednesday episodes were taped to spend time with his wife. He would usuallly fly back to Los Angeles on Sunday afternoons. It was during a flight back to Los Angeles on Sunday, October 6, 1985, that Johnny suffered a stroke. He died on October 12., 1985. His wife, Penelope, died on August 17, 2000.

I recall that Johnny was 75 years old at the time of his passing. I didn't realize that his wife outlived him by almost 15 years. She must have either been way up there in years, or quite a bit younger than he was.

I enjoy watching the Price Is Right every day and it seems like Bob and Johnny are right here with me!! No offense to Drew Carey, cause I do love Drew Carey, but Bob Barker was the Price Is Right!! I watch Drew every now and then. But I watch Bob Barker every day. The episodes I’m watching now have Johnny as the announcer … I can’t imagine how shocking his sudden death was to his coworkers! I know they all love him dearly!!

Although Johnny Olson was the voice of The Price Is Right for its first 13 years, they found a good replacement in Rod Roddy--and he ended up being on the show longer than Olson was (until he also passed away following a battle with cancer). I believe the original version of "Press Your Luck" ended its original run in September 1986, so yes, Roddy was doing double duty for several months.

The following week and for the next couple months, guest announcers were Bob Hilton, Rich Jeffries (not meant to be an announcer), Gene Wood, and soon-to-be-permanent Rod Roddy.

Rich Jeffries always sounded like he had a cold. From what I’ve read, that was advice given to him by Gene Wood. Why he wanted him to sound that way is a mystery.
