Cullen was amazing at ad libbing. DiCapua: "The first time I take the boat out I'd like to invite the whole panel to come with me." Cullen: "Do you know how to run a boat?" DiCapua: "No.....but I have someone who can teach me." Cullen: "Well, we can always get another panel." I was a contestant on Pyramid with Bill Cullen hosting in 1976. Of course, contestants cannot talk with the host except while doing the business of the game, but he is one of the people in show business I would have liked to have been able to have lunch or dinner with and just chat. Such a gentleman and such a professional with so much experience. I loved watching him on TPIR as a kid. Without Cullen, this show would have lasted only three or four years. It might have been forgotten and never made a comeback with its new format. Whatever the prize, Cullen always made it sound like it was something he would love to have. Props to Don Pardo too, whose distinctive delivery always made it sound like he was really impressed with the prize, even though he was just reading advertising copy. They gave away $16,000 in prizes on this episode. They'd be worth over ten times that today. Not bad, as long as you had the money to pay the income tax on them. What I liked about TPIR then is that there were a lot of original, sometimes unique prizes to be had, like the painting and the mink-trimmed sofa from "the first to conquer living space, that's Castro convertible. They conquer space with fine design and save you money all the time. They're tops in the convertible line, Castro convertible." (Amazing how one remembers jingles from one's childhood sixty years later.) Not that I or my parents would have wanted a mink-trimmed sofa, mind you. At this time, Fidel Castro was just coming to power in Cuba, and we all asked, "Are they related to Fidel Castro?" Of course, they weren't. Bernard Castro came to the USA from Italy in 1919. Great memories. Thank you for posting these episodes.
