I agree it’s a very different interpretation of Moses’ story, but I still think they did an excellent job in bringing in a message of the power of community and faith to such a broad audience. Thank you so much for the fantastic review and that heartfelt invitation. I love to see the hands and feet finding its way into new forms of media. I think they did a phenomenal job on this movie. They set out to make the most compelling story they could, that translates well to a movie format, while still being relatively accurate to the biblical account of the events. I think they nailed it! The brother dynamic may not be accurate, but I think it was a necessary addition. It raises the emotional stakes of the situation and gives the audience something to latch on to. Its far easier for people to relate to a conflict between two brothers, than between God and a nation. It also makes since that they would cut out the Aaron dynamic, since it would mean you're main protagonist would have a speech impediment.

Know it's not the most accurate adaptation, but I love how this film was an emotional exploration of Moses caught between two worlds and going through a moral awakening. Also thought the scene of Ramses being given back the ring to say "freeing my people was the only reason I came" was a poetic way of saying God "hardened his heart." And the cherry on top being that the last "DELIVERY US" line was delivered by Moses' mother.

one of my fav movies as a child. This movie deals alot with holding grudges and therapy and forgiveness. Something I am struggling with now. The visuals were amazing I love it so much. The fact that Bal Kilmer voiced both God and Moses is something I enjoy alot. The power of words is something as well. For example.... when Moses says single handedly his brother would bring the greatest empire to ruin... he did because of his stubbornness and pride. Moses would never gain a burden like the one that would be passed down from pharoah.... very true he gained an even greater one. When Ramses says that there will be great cry in Egypt.... God said ight for show

I think Rameses was sad because, for many years, he thought his brother was dead, and when he returned, he was not the same young man Rameses knew, and he did not return as a prince of egypt and the little brother Rameses always knew. He returned to defy Pharaoh, not because he wanted to stay and live with Rameses again, but to demand his people be set free. I don't justify Pharaohs actions or inaction, but I think many of us would have done the same in Rameses place. The fear of losing the respect as authority (authority based on the fact that Pharaohs are conmected to the Gods of Egypt), a role which you've been trained to hold your entire life, a huge part of your identity, something you've always been strictly reminded of by your father, the fear of not fullfilling the expectations that the father has on you... clashes with the love for his brother and with Moses's mission. Still, that doesn't justify what he does or doesn't do.

Ramases being alive on the rock at the end doesn't really bother me all that much. My thought process is he probably just like starves to death or tries to swim back but gets eaten by the sea creatures or something. I actually really like how he ends his arc all alone having lost everything because it really hammers home his fall and the message it brings. That if you hold onto your hatred and your pride and your thirst for vengeance and harden your heart and REFUSE to let it go, you'll get dragged down and lose all that you hold dear. Which is exactly what happened to Ramases. He had EVERY opportunity to let the slaves go and move on with his life and rebuild his kingdom with his people and his son alive, but every opportunity, he CHOSE to go down the path of revenge anyway. To the bitter end. And it cost him everything. I know it's not Bible accurate, but I feel like it was a necessary change that really benefited the film. It made for a heartbreaking, but powerful warning about the dangers of pride/ego/revenge. But that's just my opinion. Loved hearing your thoughts! ✝️🙏🏻

Which is interesting because the middinites where actually distantly related to the Israelites. This is why Jethro was a high priest. But it just goes to show how family is often the biggest enemy. I mean Jacob's brother formed the Edomites as well. And then their is Lots children. All tribes that where later big enemies of Israel. They all had the Gospel but when they turned away from the gospel gradually they fell into idolatry and became almost worse then others who didn't once have the gospel. Very true to life. The middinites here were still practicing belief in Yaweh.

The only major difference from this and the bible story, is that in the real story the Pharaoh's wife needed a wet nurse, and they were sneaky about it and Moses' mom ended up volunteering to be it. So he was actually secretly raised by his own mom, knowing his heritage as he grew. So the real story is more about him growing up and having to accept who he is, than suddenly figuring it out. It doesn't really change much in the long run, but wanted to let anyone in the comments who wanted to know how the bible really is. Of course several things were added, like the bible doesn't discuss much how his "brother" felt about it and etc, so some drama was assumed in the movie, but tbh most of the sentiment and soul of the story is left pretty much intact.

This movie was kind of a remake of the 1956 Cecil B. DeMille epic "The Ten Commandments," keeping the same name for the Pharoah and ending at the same place. Of course, the 1956 version does have the Hebrews making the golden calf, which was omitted here, as you observed. One thing this movie had that the other did not was a plausible reason for the hardening of Pharoah's heart with the weak link metaphor. You asked if there is a part 2. There is not, but Dreamworks did make another animated movie based on a Biblical story, That was "Joseph: King of Dreams." That went straight to video, though, but it is still a good movie and did a good job depicting the story of Joseph, son of Jacob, which you also mention in your discussion after the movie. I would like to see your reaction to it.
